Gov. Jerry Brown must rapidly close a $25 billion budgetary shortfall. But right now, it seems almost a hopeless task since the state's disastrous budget is a symptom, not the cause, of California's much larger nightmare.
California has the most fertile soil and most conducive farming climate in the country. Tourists flock to see the beauty of Yosemite, Death Valley and a 1,000-mile coastline. The state is rich in gas, oil, minerals and timber. It has the largest population in the nation at 37 million residents.
California does not ask its millions of foreign immigrants to come with legal status, speak English or arrive with high school diplomas, but then is confused when its entitlement and legal costs skyrocket.
So in truth, the state's problems involve a larger "California philosophy" that is relatively new in its history, one that now curbs production but not consumption, and worries more about passing laws than how to pay for them.

Good conservative Freepers are welcome though.. :)
Back when the Democrats had control of the state of Tennessee, it looked like they were well on their way to making the state a real illegal friendly place if not a sanctuary state. This is where they came to get their drivers licenses; for a long time you couldn’t get into the places to get licenses for the long lines of illegals. Of course, no “English spoken only” in the business community, so any law that comes up in that vein is lobbyed against vigorously with the claim that it would hurt business. That’s not likely to change, but the drivers license thing did seem to change anyway.
NJ isn’t doing anything to dissuade them from coming here; in fact, we need them to keep open many schools and other businesses. American taxpayers, and the companies they work for, are fleeing the cost of this new menace, as well as the “pre-existing conditions” of socialism combined with a huge urban underclass. Our urban areas recently laid off a lot of employess, as there was not enough business, taxpayers, or state/federal aid to keep the whole thing going. We still have a lot of snow from the post-Christmas storm on our streets (blocking parking ansd such); a lot of people are unhappy with the new fiscally-responsible (by comparison only) NJ.
Get out the popcorn and watch people with disordered minds remedy a problem they created with their tax and spend philosophy. The insanity of electing a Democrat to solve problems created by Democrat policies can only lead to ...what?
Maybe US taxpayer dollars can be used to bail out California? ...EU and Chinese currency? ...higher taxes, contributions, investments from ??? ...bankruptcy? ...blame Bush?
Maryland welcomes illegals with open arms!
Florida is on the right path with Governor Scott and AG Bondi. We own the Senate and House and have one Senator..Rubio. In 12 we will get rid of Bill Nelson. Not bad.
Thank God we have a GOP Congress otherwise the libs would be sending your money west already.
Stew in your own juice, baby.
And the Obama Admin has done a lot of damage with the Fed protection of the Delta Smelt. They have shut off most of the water to the Central Valley citing the diminishing numbers of the little fish (apparently they get caught in the apparatus that controls the water flow). Driving down the 5 a year ago, we saw most of the farms had no crops. Over the course of the 4 hour drive, we saw several signs that said ‘Congress Created Dustbowl’. Live by the Ecological sword, die by the Ecological sword. The citizens of California need to take back that state from the Leftist Elites. Sadly the last election didn’t show that Californians are aware of that fact.
How does your state stack up?
I live in NY, and we suck, but then I read about California and am glad I don’t live there.
“NY...We ain’t California....Yet”
They also get eaten by a non-native introduced sport fish (striped bass) and are cross-bred with a non-naive smelt. Note that the State does NOTHING about those "problems." The reality is that this is a bureaucrat gravy train fed by a crooked real estate racket looking to put farmers out of business to get cheap dirt.
650,000 people - 1.2 billion dollar surplus.
I got a email yesterday that I believe was also written by Hansen. He describes what is going on in the central part of California. The trash dumping and the squalor of tent cities put up by illegals. It sounds absolutely horrible and I fear Brown will ignore it.
I saw the same signs you did when I went back to CA over the summer to visit family. It is sad to see entire orchards dead because of the insane water policies (the smelt have been doing fine for how long now?).
The unfortunate truth is that the people who keep voting for the mindless leftists live in cities or the highly populated strip along the coast. Many of them have never left the urban areas, and have little understanding of where their food comes from (all that organic produce magically appears in the Whole Foods store, doncha know?). As long as the generous welfare policies and overpaid unions keep going unchecked, the number of clueless city voters will not diminish. California will keep spiralling downward until the dollars to try to keep the leftist fantasy utopia alive run out.
Our state, North Dakota is wealthy and sitting fine. Only problem is that the rats and rinos are trying their best to squander our wealth and bring us up to the level of Kalifornia.
Everybody is held to be sustainable, except the governments. Governments untenable by nature.
Calfornia. . .coming to a state near YOU! (especially NY)
California’s way of life is based on the idea that you’re better off holding out on doing anything and just letting that shine of yours draw in money and free services.
It is a classic case of an attitude attributed to a mental breakdown taking over an area.
People stop working because it is socially easier to get money for free while looking down on those who actually do the workload as slaves.
Dem states desperately need anyone to keep their municipal employees doing something; unfortunately there isn’t much tax revenue in people that ARE the black market in terms of working and renting (often illegal) apartments for cash, while draining services without reimbursement.
