SAN FRANCISCO: Major cuts proposed to homeless services
SFGate: City Insider ^ | 2/9/11 | Heather Knight

To get a sense of just how dire the city's budget picture is, take a look at proposals from the Human Services Agency to comply with the mayor's requirement that departments come up with 10 percent in cuts and another 10 percent as a contingency.

For the Human Services Agency, each 10 percent plan totals $9.3 million - and it's getting harder and harder to find trims. Director Trent Rhorer has prepared a memo outlining his suggestions, though they still need approval from the agency's commission.

For starters, services would be majorly cut back at the city's two drop-in centers for homeless people to access showers, meals, storage facilities, referrals to medical care and case management.

Wow. SF loves its homeless more than its business owners.. This is hughly series.

Could we soon be seeing No more EBT cards, free meals or medical care?

Send ‘em back where they graduated from. Let that community clean up its own mess.

Yeah, they talked about cutting stuff.

Then they got bored, smoked pot and played ping pong for the rest of the day....

They always start with public services. Heaven forbid that they cut their own salaries and perks first, or ever.

The comments on this story at sfgate.com are priceless. I really can’t tell if some of them are sincere or satire.

This is an extra-butter popcorn story if I have ever seen one!

O Noez! Things cost money and chasing away businesses from the city chases away their moneys a well! WHO KNEW?

It's about time! Hmmn, new mayor in charge with Newsome gone. Years ago, while having to support the homeless shelters in SF (I managed a computer services group) I was shocked to see all the free services provided. The homeless had washers and dryers with free detergent. Free telephone use. Recreational centers, etc. All "free", while other city services were cut. Millions of dollars wasted.

Drunks and drug addicts will have to now cash their disability pension checks at a bank instead of the corner liquor store. In other developments, the SF Gerbil subsidies will be hard hit.

Pelosi is filthy rich. Why don’t they take her money and give it to the poor?

Wow. SF loves its homeless more than its business owners.. This is hughly series.

By "SF" are you referring to the city's government or its people?

If San Franciscans truly love their homeless, the city can cut benefits to the bone and its hard-working people will take up the slack. If that doesn't happen, then the people don't want it, right?

I suppose that makes too much sense...

Agreed. This the best one I’ve seen since the story about the two SF neighbors who were feuding because one guy’s redwood trees were blocking other guy’s solar panels.

I’ve posted this before; but look how they harass landlords.
It looks like they could cut much more government.
I would not want to invest in rental real estate there.
