CALIFORNIA Dan Walters: Tom Ammiano's pro-sports boondoggle
Sacramento Bee ^ | 2/9/11 | Dan Walters

The California Legislature has utterly failed to perform its most basic duty – balancing the budget. But that's just one placard on its wall of shame.

Legislators have also botched water policy, transportation policy, education policy and energy policy, thus diminishing the economic competitiveness of a state mired in a seemingly intractable recession.

They waste their time – actually our time – on such trivial matters as designating a state rock and naming freeways after each other, while hitting up lobbyists for campaign checks and plotting their next political career moves.

Not surprisingly, poll after poll finds that Californians hold the Legislature in almost universal disdain.

Given that, one would think lawmakers would be doing everything they could to demonstrate that they are worthy of the highest-in-the-nation salaries, cars, staffs and hefty "per diem" payments we provide them. But no, they introduce measures such as Assembly Bill 266.

San Francisco Democrat Tom Ammiano's bill falsely proclaims that sports are a vital economic activity and declares the Legislature's intention to create a "Statewide Sports Authority" . . .

What part of "stone broke" doesn't Ammiano understand?
People like Ammiano have spent their entire lives using "Other People's Money" and have no concept of what being broke means.

And remember that California bucked the national tide against Democrats in November. Every single elected constitutional officer in California, from governor on down, is a Democrat.

And both houses of the legislature are run by Democrats.

California could be a laboratory for the Democrats to show us how to solve the severe problems the state is facing. Since good Democrats are running the show at every level of state government, they will have the credit, or blame, for however this mess in California turns out.

If there’s any silver lining to having a Democrat dominated state, it could be that there’s no way anyone can blame evil Republican policies for California problems now. Good Democrats are in charge; it’s up to good Democrats from Jerry Brown on down to step up to the plate and take care of business.

Apparently you don't follow politics much. Two years into his term Obama is still blaming Bush/Republicans for all our national problems -- and getting away with it. And two years from now CA Democrats will still be blaming Schwarzenegger and Republicans for Ca's woes. It's the Democrat way: never take responsibility for anything.

Not surprisingly, poll after poll finds that Californians hold the Legislature in almost universal disdain.

Which is, of course, why they re-elected most of them.

When you vote to re-elect a politician, you lose your right to disdain him. You are the problem, not him.

Is this guy from another planet? What about the latest poll, on Nov 2? Democrats were elected and returned to office from top to bottom of the ballot.

Californians don’t hold them in disdain. They can’t seem to get enough of them.
