DALLAS (AP) — The Mayor of Dallas says he did not sanction giving Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick a “key to the city.”

Vick won The Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year award this past season, his second in the NFL since serving 18 months in prison for operating a dogfighting operation.

Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway presented the key at a ceremony in Dallas last week.

In a statement issued Monday, Mayor Tom Leppert distanced himself from the gift.

“The action taken was not sanctioned by my office and was not an official ceremonial honor on behalf of the city of Dallas,” he said.

Not this again! Vick has paid his debt to society, so why are some still wanting to punish him? Forgive him. He admits he was wrong and even speaks out to young people how wrong he was back then. So lay off on him! Gee whiz! Congrats to Vick for coming back, few do as he has done.

"Who woulda thought AP has a Comeback Player of the Year award."

Yes, it's been around for decades. It's usually given to players who are coming back from a major injury - like when Marino won when he came back from his Achilles injury - or that have been out of the league for performance issues. I'm positive that Vick is the first player to win it because he was out of the league and in prison. I'm not sure that's what they had in mind when they created the award.

You go ahead and forgive him. I choose not to reward and celebrate disgusting pieces of human debris.

If you think for one moment that Vick wouldn’t still be abusing dogs if he hadn’t been caught you live in a fantasy world.

IMHO Vick never should have been allowed back in the league.

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding...we have a winner! You are correct sir!

Being a longtime resident of DFW, I can confirm that this is another in a long string of bad decisions by the Dallas City Council.

Go Cowboys!

It is possible to both forgive him and NOT give him a key to a city.

I have no doubt that he'd have done the same to humans if he'd thought he could get away with it.
