WASHINGTON -President Barack Obama says the United States intends to formally recognize Southern Sudan as a sovereign, independent state in July.

Obama made the announcement Monday in a statement congratulating the people of Southern Sudan for "a successful and inspiring" referendum.

Election officials said Monday that more than 98 percent of ballots in the Jan. 9 vote were for independence. That means South Sudan will become the world's newest country in July.

Obama said that after decades of conflict the image of millions of southern Sudanese voters deciding their own future was an inspiration to the world. He also said it's another step forward in Africa's long journey toward justice and democracy.

So he was inspired by decades of conflict, and decided to recognize South Sudan? Something's missing here. This move requires a lick of common sense and/or a shred of decency, and if he doesn't lack one, he lacks the other. Is the New South Sudanese government sponsoring terrorism or something?

Oh give me a break.

Hussein is doing what his hack cabinet has told him to do—and nothing more. He doesn’t give one damn about the people of Sudan.

This is international affairs by photo op. He is the biggest joke in that office since Carter.

Sudan President Omar al-Bashir on Monday backed the final results and said he wanted to be the first to congratulate the south on their new state.

That prompted Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to say Monday that the U.S. is reviewing its designation of Sudan as a sponsor of terrorism. She said in a statement that the designation will be lifted, if Sudan does not support terrorism for the preceding six months, promises to continue doing that in the future, and fully implements the 2005 peace agreement.

President recognizes a new African nation that 98% of American's can't point to on a map. Well, that's nice. Good for "New Sudan".

And if "Sudan"-Sudan decides to steamroll "South Sudan", let George Clooney lead a military force made up of Brad and Angelina's adopted children to go fight on it's behalf.

They did something on TV, singing and dancing while they voted. So now everyone’s all excited about it, and O will recognize them in July sometimes, if they still exist by then. But then again, Israel should have recognized S. Sudan yesterday. Another country beset by Islamist genocidal maniacs? No brainer. Bibi? Mah koreh itkha?

Next thing I expect to hear is that South Sudan has become a member of NATO, so when they get overrun by REAL Sudan, America will do nothing... just like in Georgia.

No not as far as I know, they are mainly Christian. I’m not sure why the Zippy government is so enthusiastically encouraging this. Maybe because they know that there will be border wars in the future? As a rule Islam always causes problems wherever it has to share a border with a non-Islamic country. These poor South Sudanese have a lot of bloodshed to look forward to.

Zippy is just a hypocrite.

That prompted Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to say Monday that the U.S. is reviewing its designation of Sudan as a sponsor of terrorism.

Note that Darfur will remain part of 'northern' Sudan. Remember all the cries during the Bush years that we should send troops into Darfur. But my how things change when a Democrat takes office. Sudan will now be free to terrorize the people of Darfur while at the same time they will be dropped from the sponsor of terrorism list. Isn't that special?
