State Department to Americans in Egypt: Get out now
Monday, February 7, 2011 - 12:24 PM Share
Despite what appears to be greater calm on the streets in Egypt over the weekend, the State Department sent out a new Travel Warning on Sunday, Feb. 6, that instructs all American citizens to leave Egypt now.
The new, stronger alert replaces a previous Travel Warning from Feb. 1 that called for the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and their families. The State Department had been chartering planes to help evacuate American citizens from Cairo, but those flights have now stopped. Nevertheless, the new Travel Warning calls for all citizens to leave Egypt, noting the potential for more violence in the offing.
"U.S. citizens should consider leaving Egypt as soon as they can safely do so, due to ongoing political and social unrest," the Travel Warning stated.
The international airport in Cairo is open and has availability on outgoing flights, the State Department said, adding that travelers can also leave Egypt from airports in Luxor, Alexandria, and Aswan.
"Do not wait for a reply from the embassy or the Department of State before traveling to the nearest airport; further delay is not advised," the warning stated.
The State Department is also calling on U.S. citizens to avoid all demonstrations and to not go near Tahrir Square, for fear that foreigners could again become targets of violence.

They know war is a-brewing. Since they helped engineer it, I would take them at their word.
The calm might be deceiving.
Good thing Bobby Gates hasn’t been able to cut the USN/USMC’s amphibious capability or this cable would read “get out when you can.”
This looks like a game over warning. The kind you hear from a junior officer when he realizes that the bridge crew has already grabbed a lifeboat and there is nothing more he can do to save his ship. This is the call of every man for himself.
Especially considering the earlier one, that was less dire even when it appeared that the street battles then ongoing might get out of control.
I don't know how these things are assessed, but the US embassy must have received some sort of new intelligence on the situation that hasn't been made public.
Or they’re a day late and a dollar short.
Egypt ping!
Thanks RR :)
You are correct. Though the calm appears to be holding, things go 180 degrees quickly, in the Middle East. I was so happy to hear the good news of the high school students being out.

I guess when American journalists get severly beaten in Tahrir Square,
that does send a “get out now” message.
Commandante Zero probably thinks that Carter would have been re-elected had he just told Americans to get out of Iran!
Run! Run!
That’s true leadership!
Yea, I can’t tell if this is a “day late, dollar short” kind of warning or whether this is based upon new intel.
On the ground, things look to be de-escalating. Mubarak has dug in, protests have begun to wane and commerce seems to be re-starting.
Who knows . . . what a mess.
The Christian European West barely escaped destruction at the hands of the Moslems. At one point they were stopped near Tours and at another point, later on in time, outside the gates of Vienna. The Church throughout northern Africa was practically destroyed by Moslem power, and at the present hour, the Moslems are beginning to rise again.

That idiot rank amateur in the White House lit the fuse on a powder keg and has just now figured out he needs to yell RUN!
He makes Carter look extremely competent, just scary...
