Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have rekindled their alliance on immigration reform, taking some early steps to test the political will for addressing the contentious issue this year.
(snip)
Its in the infant stage, Graham told POLITICO. I dont know what the political appetite is to do something.
(snip)
And in one closely watched comment, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) let it slip recently that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) seems to think that theres a shot at this. It led to a round of speculation that the McCain of the past, the senator who ushered a comprehensive bill through the chamber in 2006, might be ready to come back.
(snip)
The involvement of heavyweights like McCain and Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) may be the only way to lend broader credibility to the effort.
Conservatives are hacked off with Schumer for so many reasons, said the Rev. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Conventions Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, who supports comprehensive immigration reform. Both carry baggage. There need to be some new faces that carry the issue, such as Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).
(snip)
McCain said he wont rejoin the talks until Congress approves a 10-point border security plan, which he and Kyl introduced last year, and the governors of the states adjoining Mexico certify their borders as secure.
The smart move for the country and the administration would be, take McCain-Kyl and make it law, Graham said. Let everybody know we are putting resources in the border and were going to fix it. And then move on to the other parts.
(snip)
Murkowski confirmed to POLITICO that her staff has been contacted by Schumer aides to discuss the issue, but the discussions havent involved her yet.

Ummm, I don’t think the border is secured yet.
Juan is such a schmuck... remember his commercial to get reelected?
Geeze, Arizona, what have you done ?
And what does the great, young turk Republican leader Paul Ryan have to say about this issue? I've never heard his stance on amnesty. Does he just parrot McCain, or does he have an opinion on what should or shouldn't be done.
Ronald Reagan already passed a more than generous amnesty so that we wouldn’t have people here illegally. It wasn’t that long ago. Any dispute over ‘amnesty’ from here on in can be had only when they’re back in their legal, home countries.
Then we can talk about what to do with the 12-20 million illegals here now.
I know there is no way in hell we can deport 20 million people, 6% of the entire population.
But amnesty just ain't in the cards. Maybe something along the lines of:
NO illegal can ever become a citizen of the United States.
Maybe something like a green card for any without felonies.
I don't know if this is workable but it could be a starting point for discussion.
McCain was just elected to his LAST term. He’ll never face the AZ voters again, so he can do whatever he pleases..That’s what makes Orin Hatch and Lindsay Graham so dangerous..
I know there is no way in hell we can deport 20 million people, 6% of the entire population.
YES WE CAN, see Operation Wetback.
The scary part is that not only do they think we’ll fall for it again—oh, they’ve already agreed to seal the border, so now we can move ahead with amnesty for 30 million illegal immigrants here currently—but also that there is a chance they’re right.
I really want to see this as an energized, litmus-test issue for our candidates in 2012. The best possibility is that McCain and Graham contribute to waking the electorate up on this in time for that.
The government will never build a border fence.
Too many factions in DC want a Dream Act for too many Utopian reasons to list.
Instead, the government will create a Yugoslavia in America.
Once the money runs out trying to placate each faction, hell will break loose.
It’s more realistically 30 million—and much of what we need to do is make it unpleasant enough for the majority to deport themselves. Creating a majority-minority population when that majority of minorities holds favored status over the longer-resident, non-minority population is a recipe for national disaster. Leftist America here we come!
Maybe if they show that the border has been controlled for 75 years, then maybe it should be put up for consideration.
Do those things and most illegal aliens will deport themselves quite rapidly and they will pay their own way home.
People need to stop falling for that scare tactic of the leftist, open borders advocates. We don't have to "round up and deport 20 million people". We just have improve border security and start enforcing the law at the employer level and people will begin self-deporting. Then we deport any illegals who become known after routine contacts with law enforcement.
It would take years, but most illegals would self-deport when there was greatly diminished economic gain available to them.
NO illegal can ever become a citizen of the United States.
And what about children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, etc. etc.? That plan would solve nothing, and do nothing to discourage future illegal entries.
We don’t need to and it’s a losing strategy to recommend it.
McCain’s law of physics reinforced - turds still float on water.
I never said it was a plan. What I said was it could be a place to start a discussion.
Rubio needs to be clearly outed on this issue before his slobbering fans put him on 2012 presidential ticket. People need to cool off and we need to learn much more about this guy. Is he really a conservative, or just Mel Martinez 2.0?
Actually the way to do it would be to go after the businesses that hire illegals. It would then be self-deportation. Republicans would never go for this.
