Veteran GOP Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana has thumbed his nose at Tea Party threats. The Hoosier State Republican knows they are coming after his Senate seat in 2012 but he is not going down without a fight.

Lugar, who has served six terms in the Senate, has $2.3 million in his campaign war chest, which likely puts him far ahead of any potential primary challengers. But the 78-year old says he is kicking his fundraising up a notch in preparation for a tough assault from the right.

Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock (R ) is expected to formally launch a challenge against Lugar this weekend, according to Politico. Mourdock recently visited Washington, where he paid his respects to Tea Party kingmaker Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC).

Tea Party groups in the Hoosier State have said they will rally around one candidate to unseat Lugar in the 2012 Republican primary. State Sen. Mike Delph (R ) has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.

Does Lugar think the future of the Tea Party Movement hinges on his sorry, pathetic ass? Or is it jut the headline writer?

I spit a luge e on lugar.

Hey you RINO POS. ....... US Tea Party did this http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2426244/posts just for the chance to replace the biggest traitor since Benedict Arnold. And we did this in full knowledge that Scott was as big a POS Rhino as you.

Now imagine lugar scumbag..... how much money is coming to replace you.

Replace you with a real American.

A Simple Bricklayer

P.S.... You had better raise at least a order of magnitude your measly 2 mill war chest. Better yet... retire with your well earned funds.

That is where the K street money is. It isn't exactly retirement when you make MORE after your government service than during.

I just find it amusing the dichotomy of the two views expressed.

That Luger is such a lowlife that even if he lost the GOP nomination, the scumbag would run as an independent.

Contrasted with....

If Luger wins the GOP nomination (the lowlife scumbag), the Tea Party guy should run as an independent.

There was a time when Lugar was a pretty good Senator. But that was years and years and years ago.

His behavior during the past few years has been abominable.

Lugar, with that stupid S**t-eating grin, looks way too much like Howdy Doody,

Who we would really need in his office is Buffalo Bob.

Even Clarabelle the Clone Clown would be a step in the right direction.

It is difficult to unseat sitting Senator in primaries (see Alaska), but certainly possible (see Utah).
In anycase, he is number one target to be defeated in primaries. (Blue state RINOs, like Scott Brown in MA, are not primary targets, if targets at all).

Here is the challenger info:

Richard E. Mourdock

Richard Mourdock was elected as the 53rd State Treasurer in November 2006 and took office on February 10, 2007. He brings to the office a 30-year record as a business leader in the Hoosier energy, construction and environmental industries.

In addition, Richard served two terms as County Commissioner of Vanderburgh County from 1995 to 2002, where he gained a reputation as a results-oriented leader by setting goals and measuring progress.

As Treasurer, Richard serves as the State’s Chief Investment Officer, where he seeks to maximize the return on the State’s investment portfolio. He also serves as Chairman of the Indiana Bond Bank, Wireless Enhanced 911 Advisory Board, and the Indiana Education Savings Authority as well as being the Secretary and Investment Manager of the Indiana Board for Depositories and the Trustee of the State Police Pension Plan.

Richard holds a Master’s Degree in Geology from Ball State University and a Bachelor’s Degree from Defiance College in Ohio.

On a personal note, Richard is a licensed pilot with more than 2000 hours of flight time, has been active in Christian Missions in Bolivia on many occasions and is a marathon runner, having completed six marathons in the past eight years. Richard and his wife, Marilyn, live in Darmstadt, Indiana.

Idiot is 78, and it hasn’t occurred to him that perhaps its time to go. I hope Indiana can whack this guy in the primary.

I’ve voted against Lugar in the primaries for at least the last three cycles but never heard a peep against him. Where has all of this buried animosity been?

Richard Lugar, a RINO, is almost 79 and will have served 36 years in the senate by 2012. Enough is enough. He has to go! That guys like this old dinosaur are coming out and challenging the TEA party to unseat him just demonstrates their collective arrogance built up over decades of too-easy election victories and being kowtowed to by sycophants. Old Man Luger wants a fight? I say, give it to him, good and hard. This is not a time for 'business-as-usual' RINO politicians and if Lugar doesn't get it - and it's obvious that he doesn't- he needs to be challenged and beaten in 2012. We don't need more fossils with lifetime jobs 'representing' us. Stow the tough-guy nonsense and retire, Richard and in the process, perhaps have a chance to save your dignity.

Lugar is an example of why one should not give to GOP national committees, only to individual candidates.

Do any Hoosiers have any insight into who might oppose him in the primary? To whom should we be contributing?

Hey Lugar, phone your buddy John McCain - he can give you some advice on how to fool the rubes again and again.
