Anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks has been nominated for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian politician behind the proposal said on Wednesday, a day after the deadline for nominations expired.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee accepts nominations for what many consider as the world's top accolade until February 1, although the five panel members have until the end of the month to make their own proposals.
Norwegian parliamentarian Snorre Valen said WikiLeaks was "one of the most important contributors to freedom of speech and transparency" in the 21st century.
"By disclosing information about corruption, human rights abuses and war crimes, WikiLeaks is a natural contender for the Nobel Peace Prize," Valen said.
Members of all national parliaments, professors of law or political science and previous winners are among those allowed to make nominations. The committee declined to comment on the WikiLeaks proposal or any other nominations.
Washington is furious at WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange for releasing tens of thousands of secret documents and diplomatic cables which it says have harmed U.S. interests abroad, including peace efforts.
Assange, An Australian, faces extradition to Sweden from Britain for questioning in a sex case which he and his supporters say is a smear campaign designed to close down WikiLeaks, a non-profit organization funded by the public and rights groups.....

The Nobel Prize is now a joke.
The problem I see with this nomination...is that he’s an accused rapist in Sweden (for doing it without protection, and then saying no when asked to take a HIV test). I would imagine that voting him into this deal would invite hostile women to show up at the ceremony and make a rather ritzy ceremony very demoralizing for the elite that show up for this.
You have to remember....this is “the” big event of the year and you’d rather not attach a rapist to the ceremony. My guess is that they will pass on him and find some global warmer somewhere or maybe Brittney Spears....to elect for this honor.
Even I couldn’t have anticipated this one.
But when you think about it, it makes perfect sense.
In fact, I think the vote will be unanimous for Wiki.

No. The Award will appear, for very first time, as an Email attachment and will have to be printed out (on that glossy photographic paper, of course.)

Norwegians once were respected for the high standards necessary to receive a Nobel Prize. No more. Now, any leftist punk can win a Nobel Prize as long as he/she is anti-American, anti-capitalism and definitely anti-conservative. Sad. Frankly, it’s been years since I cared about who wins the Nobel Prize. It’s a leftist farce.

When Jughead (aka Zero) was awarded one within days of being sworn in as President of the United States - for something has neither actually accomplished, nor stated that he intended to accomplish, nor had taken any steps to accomplish - the Nobel Peace Prize ceased to have both credability as well as revelance.
They simply aren’t relavant to anything.
The Nobel jackwagons indeed! I think we should nominate Rush again, and this time toss in Sarah Palin for good measure. If it’s going to be a political popularity contest.
