Interventionist American foreign policies and U.S. aid that has propped up the dictatorship of embattled Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak are "responsible for a lot of the mess" in Middle East's most populous nation, Texas Rep. Ron Paul said Monday.
In an interview with Fox News Channel's Your World with Neil Cavuto, the libertarian Republican from Lake Jackson called for shutting off foreign aid not only to Egypt but to every nation in the Middle East.
"This is a typical example of what happens when we run on intervention-type foreign policies," Paul told Cavuto. "We get in the middle of these fights. We've been in the middle of this for thirty years now. We've given Mubarak 60 billion dollars. We're responsible for a lot of the mess that is over there."
He said American foreign policies of both parties have left the U.S. in a difficult position.
"The big fight now is for us to be in charge," Paul said. "If Mubarak survives we want to be on his side. If they get a new guy, we want to be on their side. And I just think that doesn't work because eventually the people rebel. For awhile it seems to be stable, but it's so artificial."
His solution: "I wouldn't just cut off Egyptian. I would cut off all aid from the Middle East and maybe that whole area would be better off for it."

Ron Paul never misses an opportunity to insert his foot in his mouth.
They were a SOVIET CLIENT STATE. That's how they got the Aswan High Dam built.
About the only thing we did there was keep the Israeli army from rolling over their country and cutting it up into Kosher delicatessens! Anyone here remember when the Israelis surrounded the Egyptian army and prepared to destroy the equipment and manpower leaving Egypt an impotent, defenseless waif in the world for the next 20 centuries?
We should have ditched the mideast after WWII. (Aside from Israel)
We missed the opportunity to spend that money on shrimp boats.
If by “we” he means 0bama, Ayres & friends - he may be on to something.
Jeez Louise....
If Mr. Warm Fuzzies really believes that, maybe he should turn himself over to the Muzzie Bros. so they can take it out on him.
Bet if we voted, the American people would overwhelmingly vote to end this foreign aid international welfare, at tax payer expense. Enough!
Our thirst for oil (Suez back in the day before ULCC’s)kept us involved; that and the post WWII-Cold war leadership role and the attendant need to counter other powers. Oh yes, and that Israel thing.
I’m not an isolationist/Paulist, but you need adults at the wheel to keep all the balls in the air.
As an aside- I didn’t notice too many Volts running around today here in KS.
What did we do? I guess we forced, Israel, Britain and France to relinquish control of the Suez Canal to the Egyptians in 1956. Then after Egypt was defeated in a second war they started in 1973 against Israel, and their army was surrounded in the Sinai Desert, we forced Israel to let the Egyptians retreat with all of their weapons. After that we forced Israel to give them back all of the Sinai Peninsula; and years later coerced a tepid peace agreement between Egypt and Israel. If it weren't for the US meddling there might not even be an Egypt today.
Maybe that's what Paul was thinking?

No doubt. I don’t care how much money I have to pay Mubarek. I want him in there. If $60 Billion US is not enough, how about $600 Billion? Or $60 Trillion.
I have been convinced. There is no amount of my money that I will not spend to keep some outcome which I have been assured is terrible, but undefined, from taking place.
After all, we have lots of money. More Government, More Spending, right? </s>
We should have left the world an open field, undefended, to an aggressive, psychopathic totalitarian force bent on destroying us?
What then?
This is what happens when you constantly stick your nose in someone else's business.
Where did Russia?, get all that money to match us dollar for dollar in the ‘turd world anyway?
The Nazis and the British caused the problems NOT us.
So he is on another blame America first tour, what else is new.
