Chicago-style politics is infamous for kickbacks, dead people voting, and thuggery. Alas, it is not just a relic of the past. In fact, witness recent stories of Chicago city workers being hired or promoted based on how well they got voters to the polls and not how well they did their official jobs, children getting admitted to prestigious city schools based on political connections, and the granting of city contracts. Unfortunately, I know first hand more than I would like about Chicago politics. A decade ago, I was working at the University of Chicago Law School as an Olin Fellow, doing research and some teaching, when I happened to cross paths with Mayor Richard Daley. As he is now about to retire from office, it is time for the facts to come out. As the author of the book "More Guns, Less Crime" and someone living and working on Daley's home turf in Chicago, I was not one of his favorite people. . . .

how is something which happened a decade ago breaking news, barring some new development?
Thugs. Plain and simple.
Well, it does sound like there was some rib breaking going on courtesy of the Daley machine.
Having read as much of Professor Lott’s article as I could stomach, I can’t help but observe that it would seem that the outgoing mayor didn’t get the memos about the “need for civility in our political life,” or, if he did get them, was too busy to read them carefully.
I lived in Chicago for 10 years. Toward the end of my stay, Daley and the Chicago thugs were on the front page of the Tribune each day, with investigative reports illustrating the level of corruption he was involved in. He had Teflon status, almost to the extent Obama had early in his presidency. You could print up a murder rap on the guy, and people would turn a blind eye to it. Daley has been incredibly fortunate his entire career. He strikes me as having severely limited intellect. His treatment of the press has been painful to watch at times.
Breaking News: Academic Freedom is a Joke!
Glad to see this after the article earlier today in which someone was slobbering how King Daley is a great guy because he and his wife play with your toddler when they see you in a diner.
What was scary? Did he try to speak English?
I am wondering, if the Mayor of Chicago can shape the news through manipulation and intimidation, just think what power the POTUS has to shape what we hear and see. Scary indeed...
The machine transcends one man. Daley is unstable, and terribly low-intellect, no doubt, and the machine is steered by him in many ways, but political machines tend to take on their own initiative and life (c.f. Tammany Hall).
It is the picking of a nit, perhaps, yet the title had me thinking you would have a personal interaction with Daley that was chilling. Your opponents might point out this nit. Wish I could have seen the article first, and I might have suggested you offer the title of "My Scary Encounter With Chicago's Daley Political Machine".
You are a wonderful intellect and a great man. Salute to you, dear sir.
The article is from today; it is Prof. Lott's revelation of what happened years ago in Daley's Chicago. This is apparently his first release of the information from his perspective. That's a new development.
HORRID grammar. Let me try again: “”My Scary Encounter With The Chicago Political Machine Under Daley”.
What do you expect living in the Soviet Republic of Chicago?
Surprise, surprise, lol... Daley is a crooked thug and a genuine scumbag.
Or, "My Scary Encounter With The Daly Regime".
Also acceptable, making, of course, the correction to Daley’s last name.
The one thing you really need to know about Daley, though, was just how nice of a man he honest too goodness is. One day last week, one of my friends had lunch downtown with his wife and little baby, in an Irish pub somewhere in the Loops warren of tiny buildings jammed between skyscrapers. In the back, at a table all by himself, sat Da Mayor, reading the paper and munching his lunch. Daley saw the little baby staring at him, and he smiled, waived, and came right over to see the little boy who instantly lit up when the Mayor gave the baby loving attention. He stopped and chatted with my friends for a good ten minutes while their food came, as if he was an uncle or old family friend they ran into instead of a politician they had never met. This has been my experience with Mayor Daley the whole time Ive lived in Chicago.Al Capone loved children too. As one of Scarface's grandniece's said:-- "Chicago political experts believe Obama will not seek a second term"
"He would get down on the floor like a big teddy bear. He loved children."
Expect more of the same from a mayor Emanuel. He’s the guy that stabs the table with a steak knife and says, “DEAD” referring to anybody that crosses him.
