The Democratic National Committee announced Tuesday that Charlotte, and not St. Louis, will be the site of its 2012 convention, ending with a thud an all-out effort by city officials here to land the event, and the thousands of visitors and national attention that comes with it.
St. Louis and Charlotte were the top contenders among four finalists, a list that also included Cleveland and Minneapolis.
In the end, the decision may have come down to politics. While St. Louis showcased its facilities and civic ardor, North Carolina is viewed as key to Obama's chances to return to the White House.
"The news today from the Democratic National Committee announcing Charlotte as the site of the 2012 Convention was not what we all wanted to hear, but we offer sincere congratulations to Charlotte and look forward to being there in September of 2012," said Brian Wahby, a St. Louis Democrat who helped lead the city's convention bid.

“In the end, the decision may have come down to politics...”
Ya think?
Pity. There were thousands of dead Dem voters in St Louis planning to attend.
"Charlotte is a city marked by its southern charm, warm hospitality, and an 'up by the bootstraps' mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest-growing in the South," the First Lady wrote. "Vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity, the Queen City is home to innovative, hardworking folks with big hearts and open minds."
"And," she wrote,"great barbecue."
Barbecue? I bet she doesn't allow it in the White House. Besides, pork in vinegar isn't barbecue. Missouri knows barbecue, it's smoked.
Hopefully, the dead will now stay home on election day.

Gotta disagree with you there. My favorite type of bar-b-que sauce/spice (in order):
(1) Vinegar based.
(2) Spice rub.
(5) Tomato based sauce.
My wife would put it in the opposite order.
BTW, all three kinds are smoked. Carolina BBQ (Vinegar) is smoked.
PS.
Pork is the only acceptable meat for BBQ.
Charlotte, NC resident here (St. Louis native by birth).
W/r to the convention, $ucks to be us.
W/r to BBQ: The correct order is:
1) Arthur Bryants
2) Other BBQ.
Crime rate was likely a bigger factor.
Just pokin’ with a stick. ;-)
Pork with dry rub, smoked over low heat for hours, no sauce.
Sorry you have to play rat host.
Regarding #1, you bet!
#2, Johnny’s Bar-B-Q in Mission KS.
My favorite: son-in-laws.
Being from Charlotte, I’m glad for the city. I just wish it was the Republican National Convention!!
No, barbecue is a pork steak wet grilled on an open pit, more or less in the Texas style of cooking.
Why bring in another 20,000 criminals?
Oh, and charcoal only, please.
This is good news. Barring a disaster, there is no way Barry is going to carry NC in 2012. They’d have been better off politically in St Louis or Cleveland.
St. Louis has too few hotel rooms and hookers. That’s also why we can’t host a Super Bowl.
Surely you would include mesquite with the charcoal. My SIL is from Texas and smoking is all he does.
To all, sorry about hijacking my own thread. I find BBQ more interesting than the rat convention. I just can’t believe that Moochelle would promote BBQ after all her healthy eating BS.
