COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A monster winter storm took aim at a third of the nation Monday, threatening to lay a potentially deadly path of heavy snow and ice from the Rockies to New England, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-rattling cold that could affect tens of millions of people.
Cities including St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee could be hardest hit, with expected midweek snowfalls of up to 2 feet and drifts piled 5 to 10 feet. Even hardy Chicago could be in for its third-worst blizzard since record-keeping began.
"I wouldn't want to be on the road in open areas tomorrow night," said forecaster Tom Skilling of Chicago television station WGN. "I don't think I'd want to be driving in the city either. The fact is people die in these things. They skid off the road and go wandering around in whiteout conditions."
Warmer areas were not safe, either. The system could spawn tornadoes in parts of the South.

The AccuWeather forums are the worst...all the posters get excited about record snow totals, ice and everything else with little regard for the people who will be killed by this...a bit nauseating.
Dallas getting clobbered now, thunderstorm, freezing rain and 29 degrees.
I admit DC (plus adjacent VA and MD) are terrible in snow. But last year we handled four or five feet of snow in a couple of storms. The last storm last wednesday was bad because most forecasters failed to warn people that there would 2 inches an hour. So we saw people with their RWD cars and summer tires holding up traffic for hours. But also over 500k without power, so a non-trivial snowstorm. Today's storm is nothing, a little glaze on untreated surfaces from freezing drizzle, but that's about it.
Does anyone think a storm live thread would be a good idea??If this is as bad a they are predicting it might be good to start one.
I used to have it on but somehow it disappeared and now the only way to get it to show is if you register with your states message board and that ALWAYS shows.
I’m in Central NY.
Ya think not?
It started snowing in early November THIS year and likely as not will still be snowing in April. We've had snow on Mother's Day too many times. (Which isn't frequent but I can remember twice clearly in the last 15 years.)
Do that every year.
Mr. mm had to go into work today so I threw in the cot and sleeping bag into the car we have ready. If told him that if he gets into work, he may need it.
I made sure to say *if*. He noticed and just looked at me.
It's not nice out now but it looks like we're in for a break in a few hours so I'll shovel out then, before we get pounded.
I was in the local Wegman's yesterday, stocking up on perishables, and the place was deserted. But it was sunny out and the roads were clear.
The place is going to be an absolute madhouse today as people, who don't watch the weather and prepare, do all their panic buying.
What some locales are considering is a salt water solution.
You might be able to use that. Doesn’t water softener salt come in big chunks?
Maybe we could make this one. Seems to be starting out that way anyway.
Since you started the thread I think you are able to rename it a live thread. What do you think??
I think the difference is better forecasting along with the hype-news sensational style weather reporting. I believe it’s meant to make people panic.
I’m in NE MO, we’re expecting quite a bit. We always have a stocked pantry and freezer, though. We did buy extra bread, milk, and shovels over the weekend, but none of it would go to waste in any event. LOL. Our heater works without electricity. We lost power a few years ago during an ice storm and it got quite cold, so we bought these gas fireplaces, they rock.
My only concern is my husband out delivering mail today.
The mods would have to do that.
AM, could this be tagged with a live thread designation?
It seems to be going in that direction anyway and I can’t edit it myself.
A Moderator told me to put requests in an “Abuse” form. That way they see them.
Ah. I’ll do that then.
We currently have about 5 inches of global warming on the ground. Looks like some ice is next.
Added ‘live thread’ to headline and moved to Front Page sidebar.
Thanks for starting this thread. My daughter and her family are in the Kansas City area and this thread will provide updates far better than mainstream media.
Here in SW Pennsylvania (Washington County)this Tuesday morning just rain, rain, rain. Roads are just wet. No freezing rain or snow yet. At least I don’t have to shovel rain!
