Monster Winter Storm Takes Aim at One-Third of U.S. (Live Thread)

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A monster winter storm took aim at a third of the nation Monday, threatening to lay a potentially deadly path of heavy snow and ice from the Rockies to New England, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-rattling cold that could affect tens of millions of people.

Cities including St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee could be hardest hit, with expected midweek snowfalls of up to 2 feet and drifts piled 5 to 10 feet. Even hardy Chicago could be in for its third-worst blizzard since record-keeping began.

"I wouldn't want to be on the road in open areas tomorrow night," said forecaster Tom Skilling of Chicago television station WGN. "I don't think I'd want to be driving in the city either. The fact is people die in these things. They skid off the road and go wandering around in whiteout conditions."

Warmer areas were not safe, either. The system could spawn tornadoes in parts of the South.

My daughter is in Southern CA going to college.

And while she misses trips to Wegman’s for groceries, she’s happy as a clam with the weather.

My son went to Boulder from California. It’s 1 degree right now. High tomorrow is supposed to be -2. He says “it sucks.” But back up to 47 by Friday.

am here! LOL....

Well we have nothing yet and was suppose to start here about midnight. Odd thing is the area here sits right on the weather lines as they come thru....you never really know what you’re going to get. But Pa. does seem to be right in the path throughout the state. Plus we have the lake affect as well...and there you have it!

I’m set for it. Though I hadn’t considered a black out...so candles coming out soon just in case. All electric here so hopeful the ice and snow don’t bring down the lines. they say one inch of ice is enough to bring them down. Filled gas and got groceries also. Even checked with work if I slip at all on the incline nearby I’ll be turning back home.

Looks like it all might be a one two punch.

The one in ‘93 came up the coast but started as rain and while some areas further south got decent snowfall, this one is coming across the country and more areas are going to be seeing much higher snowfall rates.

It looks like this will be mostly an icing event In southwestern PA. With all the hills it is dangerous for driving and walking. What we have had this winter are small storms of at the most 10 inches and a constant 2 to 3 inches every other day with very cold temperatures. This has been going on since November. The irritating part is wether it is 10 inches or 3, we still have to clear it. I am so over this winter.

Well at least it isn't the 40 inch monster we had last year.

gassed up my global warming clearing machine earlier today. I am ready!

We gassed up both of ours, looks like we're in for a lot of that global warming stuff to block our driveways & roads & sidewalks!!

I was in Dallas when it snowed. They know less about driving in snow than learned in SoCal.

Now, for some reason, snow is a big deal. What am I missing?

RATINGS! Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel is up here in Chicago & he comes on air & is sooooo over-acting. He's calling it the super-bowl of storms, he's so excited, it's sickening!

Right now, here at 8,500 ft elevetion in the Colorado Rockies west of Denver it is snowing and -6F outside. The high tomorrow id forecats to be -2F with a low tomorrow night of -20F. Got the two fireplace inserts fired up and cabinets opened under sinks to let warm air in to help prevent pipes from freezing.

We are down in Murrysville. We iced up and the rain seems to be tapering for now. The temperature is dropping fast. We have gone from 30 to 26 in the past 30 minutes. You may want to check Weather Underground radar maps. You can click on the high definition (real time) radar, animate it and then click down to your neighborhood. It will give you a heads up on what is heading your way.

Local weather guy sounding nervious tonight and giving the possibility of freezing rain and snow for southern Texas and Louisiana Thursday or Friday. Talk about not knowing how to drive under those conditions. Not only will I not drive, but I will make sure my car and pickup are about 150 feet away from the road.....Just saying ;^)

You and me both.

And everyone else I know.

We got gypped this year. No January thaw to break it up. I am SOOO ready for spring. If I never saw snow again, I could die happy.

Also, it’s the frankly incredible capability of the computer models. We’ve been obsessing over this for days here in Chi-town while there was no overt evidence of any kind of snow on the continental US. Just tonight the storm seems to be gathering over Texas and Oklahoma and starting to move to the Northeast.

I expect that. I don't know why the NWS isn't mentioning that. Every time a storm pulls off the coast, whether it comes up the coast or across the country, we get pounded with lake effect.

It's just what happens what with the way the winds swing around once the low is off the New England coast.

If CO2 causes global warming, why aren’t we all driving Hummers?

Because we can't afford them.
