Egyptians armed with sticks and razors have formed vigilante groups to defend their homes from looters after police disappeared from the streets following days of violent protests.
"There is no police to be found anywhere," said Ghadeer, 23, from an upscale neighbourhood. "Doormen and young boys from their neighbourhoods are standing outside holding sticks, razors and other weapons to prevent people from coming in."

This is something Marxists learned to take advantage of in the latter half of the 20th Century, Whenever and wherever there was social unrest, the communists almost always came out on top. They learned that when there is upheaval, most organizations and coalitions are only loosely knit. There exists lots of confusion and people instinctively look for order and an authority to turn to. The Marxists are always prepared for this, and always stand up at the key moment and announce that they are in charge and everyone can relax now. It then goes downhill from there.

I understand the allure of conspiracy theories, but some events in life aren't Master Plans staged by nefarious enemies. Egyptian security, which has penetrated the MB thoroughly, didn't seem to see this coming. Probably for the obvious reason.
Mubarak has been in power for 30 years. The people clearly hate him. There was a successful revolt in a country nearby. The Egyptian people are now emboldened.
It's not as exciting as 'devious Islamist conspiracy strikes!', but whole scene is likely as straightforward as it looks.

A lot of them are democracy seekers. Only problem is they are only helping the Muslim brotherhood because that is who will emerge victorious same as in Iran. The Iranian revolution was half leftist and half Shiite fanatic

He’s a drama queen. There’s plenty of real drama in the situation but as usual plenty of hysterics too. From here we can’t say, he can’t say, and even on the ground there most would have a hard time taking a clear read on current events, excepting only the block they are on or the room they are in.
This mess is as good an argument for the 2nd. Amendment as there is.

Al Jazeera is reporting that some people who know the police in their area have told them that the disappeared police are organizing and doing the looting in order to justify a crackdown.
This tactic is a common practice all over the world - even in America and England they have agent provocateur.
According to an article out of the UK and posted on Drudge this morning, the US government trained the protest leaders. This is information gleaned from Wikileaks embassy communications, apparently.
Marxists learned this in the first years of the 20th century. Lenin wrote a whole library of books on the technology of revolution, and he was largely correct. His methods are still in use because they work.
With regard to the "grassroots", I don't believe it for a moment. Revolutions are dangerous things, nobody would participate in them just out of the blue without a good reason. And I don't see why Egyptians would suddenly, all at once, find such a reason last week. Egypt is stable, reasonably safe, and more prosperous than many any of its West African neighbors. There must be a leading force behind all of that, and the revolution is unfolding exactly as they planned it. People and governments are just pawns, they don't have time to think, they aren't trained for counter-revolutionary activities, and they don't see the whole picture. It usually takes a genius to turn the tables on revolutionaries.
I am half tempted to start a movement where if such a thing ever happens in the US that we get a groups of conservatives and freepers together to stand in front of businesses and guard them with our own bodies to protect them from the crazy anarchist and socialist types.

My grandmother was truly alarmed and absolutely furious by Carter’s actions. We had one of those “Mark my words, young lady, no good will come of this” moments...she had lived through a lot (b 1888) and was smart enough to know how much worse it would get in Iran. She was by no means a fan of the Shah either.
Well that would be because as reports out of Egypt all night are identifying the missing police in plain clothes as the majority doing the looting which is breathtaking to say the least. The police have also abandoned the border cross points.
Its all over the other threads. Its complete madness.
Uh, I have a better idea for what to protect them with.
