My grandmother was truly alarmed and absolutely furious by Carter’s actions. We had one of those “Mark my words, young lady, no good will come of this” moments...she had lived through a lot (b 1888) and was smart enough to know how much worse it would get in Iran. She was by no means a fan of the Shah either.
