CAIRO Thousands of anti-government protesters wielding rocks, glass and sticks chased hundreds of riot police away from the main square in downtown Cairo and several of the policemen stripped off their uniforms and badges and joined the demonstrators. An Associated Press reporter saw the protesters cheering the police who joined them and hoisting them on their shoulders in one of the many dramatic and chaotic scenes across Egypt on Friday. After chasing the police, thousands of protesters were able to flood into the huge Tahrir Square downtown after being kept out most of the day by a very heavy police presence. Few police could be seen around the square after the confrontation. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. CAIRO (AP) President Hosni Mubarak imposed a night curfew and signaled he was about to send the military out in the streets for the first time to quell an unprecedented challenge to his regime by tens of thousands of protesters who rioted on Friday. One demonstrator was killed and even a Nobel Peace laureate was placed under house arrest after joining the protests. State television said the curfew would be in force from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. in Cairo, the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria and the flashpoint city of Suez east of the capital. It said the military will work in tandem with the police to enforce the ban. It was the most drastic measure so far to quell daily riots and protests that began Tuesday and spiraled into chaos on Friday after noon prayers. More

May the democrats win; the Islamofascists will attempt a takeover. Good riddance to Mubarak.
The sticking point is whether the interim regime will be, in fact, weak.
This depends almost entirely on the personality of the person or persons who take over.
From what I can see the situation could go in many different directions, no outcome is inevitable. We could with luck get another Anwar Sadat.
I’m watching FoxNews and President 0bama has just said that he wants American companies to turn the inernet and tweeter back on. Vodafone had turned off the internet in Egypt (per the Egyptian gov’ts request) so that demonstrators couldn’t communicate with Muhammed ElBareidei. Based on this it sounds like 0bama wants the US goverment to be complicite in the overthrow of an ally’s government. That oughta’ make the rest of our allies feel real good.
Note to The Corrupt Professional Left Corrupt Bass Turds in the U.S. media:
Next time you want to portray a Tea Party gathering as a bunch of "anti-government protestors", think about what is going on in Egypt, Tunisia, Greece, etc.
THOSE are examples of anti-government protests.
Learn it. Live it. Love it.
Democrats? Islamic Brotherhood is an extreme trans global Islamic group. No thanks COMMUNISTS
Mohammed El Baradei as interim president ?
Now that is weak.
“Based on this it sounds like 0bama wants the US goverment to be complicite in the overthrow of an allys government.”
We should never be in bed politically with dictators any more than we should export business/technology to communists. We have done both, unfortunately, and sooner or later, it will be to our ruin.
This is exactly what will happen here in the very near future, I suspect the Public Employees in California will be the first to RIOT when their Direct Deposit paychecks are not deposited and the retirees bloated pension checks fail to arrive. I personally think we the people should do everything humanly possible to see that it happens, because the sooner the system crashes the sooner we can start over, delaying the inevitable only creates more pain when it ends.

It won’t be long now. The writing is on the wall, and Mubarak’s political offices are burning.
Methinks Mubarak will be heading to the airport soon.
I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of those 97-or-so pieces of luggage that Mubarak’s son took with him to London has sufficient travelin’ clothes for the father.
Along with a few filled bank accounts somewhere!
I used to think the same thing. But now, thanks to Glenn Beck, I've learned that there are people who already have a system in place to replace our current system and they are intentionally trying to bring about an Egypt-style moment. And whatever it contains, freedom is not a big part of it.
It's the Cloward-Piven strategy he has chronicled over the last couple of years.
Egypt still has a vestige of tourism left. Very swiftly, probably within days, the mobs will destroy what's left of the industry and its infrastructure and the damage will last for years, probably decades to come. Fearful tourists world-wide will avoid all the hot spots in the middle east like the plague, if they haven't already.
Apocalypse Now in the region....and in the near and distant future.
