The weather seems to be going berserk, with more snow dumped on our beleaguered Northeastern cities in a month than in a year, paralyzing business and our lives. Records are being broken even as we speak.
Common sense says that it's the freezing cold that is behind the freaky weather. But physics says otherwise.
Basically, snowstorms in this region arise from the collision of cold Arctic air from Canada moving south and bumping up against warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, causing water vapor to condense and freeze and then form snowstorms, which travel up the Northeast corridor.
Among many factors, the amount of snow dumped is largely driven by the amount of moisture in humid air and not so much the temperature, and this seems to go against common sense. (For example, if we are making ice cubes, the amount of water in the ice tray, not the temperature, determines how much ice we can make. If we crank down the temperature dial in our freezer, this simply makes the ice freeze faster but does not increase the amount of ice produced.)

I remember that as well, we here in Assholechusetts had 6 foot bushes in front of house that we could not see because they were covered in snow!
Cyclical!
Out of curiosity, I went to Hartford history, here:
I hope someone could check my numbers and interpretation.
I did month to date figures last year vs this year and found that this years average is 31 degrees and last year average was 37 degrees. Also, last years degree days was 34 to date in Jan while this year was 40.
Further, the average dew point last Jan was 22 and this year 15..indicating lower humidity.
It's amusing to see speculative long-range weather modeling with a side of data manipulation dignified with the term "physics."

Such violent rhetoric to describe
a normal winter event...
Bizzard of ‘78, Northwest Ohio
That was right at the peak of “the coming ice age” crap...
“the amount of snow dumped is largely driven by the amount of moisture in humid air and not so much the temperature”
That’s why August always brings deep snows to the south.
I knew there had to be others who remembered it. It was amazing.
Of course, there was not one single story, in the media of that time, that it presaged the beginning of the end of life on earth. There was also not one story that tried to make the argument that the bitter-cold winter was the result of Earth getting warmer.
Of course, the news media was not loaded from top to bottom with stupid J-school graduate nitwits, either.
When does weather become climate? 3 cold winters in a row and counting.
American news anchors seem to be going berserk.
Awww, you poor people. Must be heck shoveling all that global warming down there!
That is nonsense. It takes cold to turn that moisture into snow. A warmer atmosphere in the winter would mean there'd be either less precipitation of any kind (due to the temperature not being cold enough to cause the moisture to condense) or torrential rains instead of blizzards.
If the earth is getting warmer, where did the cold come from?
And the solution to Global Warming?
Destroy capitalism
Kill humans
Humanity is a virus infecting the Earth Mother Goddess Gaia.
That’s what the greenies really believe.

I was trying to recall earlier today. Wasn’t there a prediction by the global warmers that there would never be snow in New York (???) again?
I may have the wrong state. But I seem to recall some such prediction.
I grew up east of you there. After the blizzard was over and the roads were plowed, I walked on the snow out to where the driveway is underneath to shovel out the driveway. I slowly slid a straw broom handle straight down in the snow until I tapped the roof of my father's 62 Ford so I had an idea where to start digging.
