Californians support vote on tax measure: (Field) poll (electorate prepared to commit democide?)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – A majority of Californians back Governor Jerry Brown's plan to ask them to extend tax increases to help close a $25.4 billion state budget gap, poll results released on Wednesday showed.

Brown, a Democrat sworn in to a third term earlier this month as leader of America's most populous state, wants lawmakers to help him put a measure to voters in June that would propose extending tax increases that expire this year to raise money for California's cash-strapped government.

Revenue from tax extensions, $12.5 billion in spending cuts and other moves would balance the state's books under Brown's budget proposal.

Revenue from tax extensions would also go to bolster the state government's finances in future years.

California's government, like many other state governments across the nation, is struggling to balance its books in the face of weak revenue caused by the worst recession since the Great Depression.

The survey by the Public Policy Institute of California found two-thirds of Californians in favor of a special election on Brown's tax measure and 58 percent saying they were generally satisfied with his overall budget plan.

"Brown's proposed special election on a tax and fee package to prevent further budget cuts is a good idea, according to 67 percent of adults," the survey report said. "Among likely voters, 66 percent say a special election is a good idea."

“Tax the top 26 people a billion.”

Dude, that’s genius!

We have to get you to Washington as Deficit Czar.

How great would it be to haul Bloomberg, Warren Buffett, the Gates family, all these magnanimous lefty frauds into the Treasury Department and make them write checks until the (U.S.) bleeding stopped.

Problem solved!

It appears that California will be the first state to receive the Darwin award.

I believe the poll, Yes the people want to vote on this TAX measure, They want to VOTE NO, and They will, then we will see moonbeam breakdown in tears as well as the Public Employee Unions, when their salaries are cut to Minimum Wage and Pensions scaled back to the Levels of SOCIAL SECURITY.

Stupid people do stupid things, including yours truly.

Collecting more money to “close the budget” gap will ensure the gap is never closed.

Does the electorate in California believe that their state politicians are better than the politicians in Illinois? Remember, the Illinois Sate legislature, in a lame duck session, voted a two per cent increase in both individual and corporate income taxes while simultaneously increasing state expenditures two per cent.

Does the electorate in California believe that their state politicians are better than Federal Politicians? A study conducted last year showed for every additional tax dollar collected Federal Expenditures went up $1.25.

In both cases spending went up as income was increased. So, adding more money to correct a budget problem will only exacerbate the problem - not cure it.

Want to solve a budget problem at all levels - stop spending. The individual does this why can’t the state and Federal governments do likewise?

I’m a little confused by this article. What exactly was the question asked? Was it, “Do you support a special election on the tax measure proposed by Governor Brown?” Or was it, “Do you support Governor Brown’s proposed tax measure?” Did they spin the question such that it sounds like these are new taxes, or did they make it sound like these are extensions of “temporary” tax increases? Subtle nuances like this can shift opinions drastically.

What was that amount of tax increase again?

Let's see. Go into the tools, click on price changes, click on per cent increase, enter amount of increase, press enter, and viola, the increase will be charged to each and every customer.

So, now, who exactly is going to pay this tax increase???

Repeated in virtually every retail outlet and service center in the entire state. yet the "commoners" are too effin stupid to grasp the situation.

I hope you are right. What was the one that Arnuld put on the ballot and (smart) people voted no? It shocked the elites.

Ken & John at KFI in So Cal were the ringleaders for the people against Arnuld’s tax increase.

I am not in CA and listened to Ken and John the day it was voted down. They were hilarious. playing short clips of Arnuld.

It’s going to be a demanding and arduous job and I suggest you appoint an assistant to oversee a small but sufficient auxillary WTF fund in order to research, plan and personally assist you in your decisions on Where To Fish.

I got some free time.

When our new Guv, Jerry Brown, comes knocking, grasping for your wallet or purse,  as you know he soon will, just try hard to remember having read THIS little piece of wisdom...

Opinion in Brief

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR_GY-h1kM1P_DVQ6laZ5h3FbzoShYSwIxxHPdwbMx2ILCYcU8IsA

"Politics being what it is, we are sure to hear all sorts of doomsday rhetoric at the thought of cutbacks in government spending. The poor will be starving in the streets, to hear the politicians and the media tell it.

But the amount of money it would take to keep the poor from starving in the streets is chump change compared to how much it would take to keep on feeding unions, subsidized businesses and other special interests who are robbing the taxpayers blind. Letting armies of government employees retire in their fifties, to live for decades on pensions larger than they were making when they were working, costs a lot more than keeping the poor from starving in the streets. .

... Bankruptcy says: 'We just don't have the money.' ... Bailouts say: 'Give the taxpayers a little rhetoric, and a little smoke and mirrors with the book-keeping, and we can keep the party rolling.'

One of the political games that is played during a budget crisis is to cut back on essential services like police departments and fire departments, in order to blackmail the public into accepting higher tax rates.  Often, a lot more money could be saved by getting rid of runaway pension contracts with public sector unions.  Bankruptcy can do that.  Bailouts cannot." --economist Thomas Sowell
