With emergency order, Fla. Attorney General outlaws bath salt used as drug

TALLAHASSEE — Hoping to fend off a rash of overdoses in Florida during the upcoming spring break, Attorney General Pam Bondi has outlawed a synthetic drug cocktail masquerading as "bath salts" that apparently gives users super-human strength and has similar effects to LSD, heroin and cocaine.

Bondi issued an emergency order Wednesday banning the drug -- Methylenedioxypyrovalerone or MDPV -- after Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen brought the dangerous concoction to her attention Friday.

"I frankly had a nightmare last night that someone was going to overdose on this and we hadn't done anything," she said.

Unlike real bath salts, sold as a means to relax and unwind, this product "makes you think you are seeing monsters and makes you think you can fly," Bondi told reporters.

The worst kind of person you want in power right there.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has outlawed

An attorney general can outlaw something? Isn't that the purview of the legislature?

The nightmare is that government officials pass laws based upon their "feelings."

“Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

What is this? 1966? Is this THE ONION? Are people still this hysterical?

While they're at it, they should burn a couple of witches.

Be thankful this person isn't dreaming about guns, cars, balconies, plastic bags, radios in the shower, swimming pools, lawn darts, cigarettes, sharks in the ocean, meteorites, UV-B, or the Yellowstone Caldera.

No telling what sort of new decrees might go forth...

Hey do-gooders, if you snort Mr.Bubble you'll see monsters and nightmares too.

You can't stop stupid people from doing stupid things. Especially addicts.

I watched people snort automatic dishwasher powder, and they liked it.

Some things you just need to let go.

I wonder what sort of 'bath salts' give appointees and even minor elected officials the power to decree things illegal?

'OK, Officer Calgon, take them away!'

My feelings are mixed on this too. I have heard recently that kids are smoking and snorting all sorts of common things. Used to be when I was in school that we would buy a big bottle of vanilla extract and get loopy on that. Mouthwash worked too. Then they started IDing kids for it.

If the products are legitimate bath salts, what is the problem? If they are cocaine or meth disguised as bath salts, that is a completely different story. Law enforcement should be trying to locate the manufacturers of this stuff and arrest them on false advertising, or something of the like, considering meth and coke are already illegal.

If these are legitimate bath salts that people can use for bathing and/or aromatherapty and kids just happen to be snorting it to get high, it is the same damn thing as vanilla extract or mouthwash. Heck, look at what they did to pseudoephedrine. Used to be OTC, now you have to get it from a pharmacist. Just ridiculous.

Let them kill themselves. Others will notice, kids will start realizing, Gee, this stuff is dangerous. If governments existed during the time of the dinosaurs, we would have a bunch of incredibly retarded animals walking around.

Only so much stupidity can be outlawed. Outlawing drugs is one thing ... outlawing common items that hammerheads are using as if they were drugs is another entirely.

There is always another chemical around the corner.

What’s next? Laws that prohibit inhaling? At least the war on drugs will be cheaper and faster in coming to a conclusion.

I have numerous friends and even a few members of my family who would be dead today if it was not for government. And it may sound calloused, but I would be okay if they were. Our parents taught us right from wrong. If something is wrong, it is wrong. Period, end of discussion. If a bunch of kids are snorting bath salts, smoking K2, playing the pass out game, or riding their bikes on the interstate, what does it matter? If they were not taught any better, then it is the fault of the parents. If they were and they did it anyway, Darwin is doing his job.

I would rather have 1,000 kids die from snorting bath salts than to ban a legitimate substance because of something they MIGHT do. When we were kids, we used to melt speed bumps in the school parking lot with gasoline. We would melt styrofoam with gasoline and light it in a steel drum to make what we called napalm. Gasoline and styrofoam are still legal, and I would bet a least a dozen kids lost hair or worse from those exploits.

It is all about natural selection, survival of the fittest, etc. Legislating safety is complete garbage. Like a puppy, they will always find a way.
