The band of about 40 robbers, some of whom were travelling as passengers, stopped the train in the Chittaranjan jungles in West Bengal around midnight. Shrestha-- who had boarded the train at Ranchi in Jharkhand, the place of his posting--was in seat no. 47 in coach AC3.
They started snatching jewelry, cell phones, cash, laptops and other belongings from the passengers, Shrestha recalled. The soldier had somehow remained a silent spectator amidst the melee, but not for long. He had had enough when the robbers stripped an 18-year-old girl sitting next to him and tried to rape her right in front of her parents. He then took out his khukuri and took on the robbers.
The girl cried for help, saying ´You are a soldier, please save a sister´, Shrestha recalled. I prevented her from being raped, thinking of her as my own sister, he added. He took one of the robbers under control and then started to attack the others. He said the rest of the robbers fled after he killed three of them with his khukuri and injured eight others.

Outside of a United States Marine the last person you want to piss off is a Gurkha with is blade. Gurkha’s are built to go the distance.
Nice story here. In the wake of 9/11, I said we should have raised a Gurkha and a Sikh provisional regiment.
Impressive feat ping.
What’s the old saying “Never bring a knife to a gun fight”?
Not sure that applies when you’re dealing with a Gurkha.
The British are abandoning their Gurkha and Sikh troops but they should be most welcome here. Frankly, I’d spend good money for a blade fight course conducted by a retired either. However, since many of the most famed of their lethal encounters have been with Muslims (1950’s Malaysia for the former and Raj India for the latter) it will take a change at the top of our political pyramid to get the invitations sent.
bttt
A Gurkha once shaved Chuck Norris’ beard with a khukri.
}:-)4
My reasoning was A) history of being great fighters and B) know how to deal with Muslims.
And on that last, it can’t happen soon enough.
I was told: The Gorkha, once he unsheathes his knife, will not put it back without drawing blood.
A 40 minute knife fight.
That should take a lot out of a man of retirement age.
Obviously they are going to have to pass a concealed Khukari law there.. We can’t have a man threatening criminals with a knife.
I we out Khukaris, only criminals can carry them.
Well said.
Even if he has to draw his own I was told.
cash award from his regiment, terminated his retirement, gave him medals, promoted him, and his gov’t is giving him a further cash bounty and discounts on air and train travel.
wish our government would treat our soldiers this well. if a marine had done the same with his k-bar he’d probably be court martialed, imprisoned, fined, and put on the no-fly list if he ever got out.
Turks with knives: ask the Chinese and NKorks.
For those too young to remember: during the Korean war, only the Turkish compounds had a single strand of barbed wire one foot above the ground.
All other nations had barbed wire, dogs, mines, and guard towers. All other nations still had huge problems with locals stealing things. The Turks never had anything stolen. Knives were part of the Turkish mil kit...
Your Marine was recently taught by experts how to use a knife in combat. The Turk was born with a knife in his mouth. Which is why a Marine confronting a Turk shoots first and ask questions later. Gurkas with a blade? Not in the same league.
Man, you gotta be tough if you have to wear a clown nose hat...
I remember Turk troops and ROK troops taking R&R in Yokohama in the 1950s. The Turks brooked no BS from anyone. The ROK guys beat the crap out of each other to stay in trim...
Also, I used to know a gentleman (now deceased) who was in Italy during WWII. He is the one who told me the knife story, BTW.
He was in Sicily, Anzio, Monte Casino etc., and said that Gurkha's fought along side the Allies in that campaign. They were all insanely courageous, super-efficient, quiet killers and unsurpassed mountain fighters. They had the constant and absolute respect of EVERYONE there.
In a tight spot, they would wait until dark and send in the Gurkha’s. These guys would invariably clear the way ahead (hand to hand) or else, return with prisoners, etc. ... anything you wanted!!!
