A week after Republicans announced plans to investigate waivers granted to organizations for healthcare reform provisions, President Obamas health department made public new waivers for more than more than 500 groups.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is granting temporary waivers to organizations that would not be able to meet the reform laws new requirement for annual coverage limits.
As of last week, HHS had granted waivers to 222 organizations covering 1.5 million individuals. Though the number of groups receiving waivers has now more than tripled, the number of individuals covered by the waivers increased just 600,000 to 2.1 million.
The law gives HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius the flexibility to grant waivers to avoid disruption in the insurance market, but Republicans say the waivers are either gifts to Democratic allies or proof that the reform law isnt working. However, a large number of businesses, in addition to unions, have received waivers.

Equal protection under the law? That's so 20th century.
businesses? names please. All dimocrat run, I betcha.
If Ocare is so great, why are waivers even needed or wanted, shouldn’t the masses be lining up for it? We know the reason, but this should be the eye opener that it is a failed plan.
Laws used as partisan political wampum.
Think I’ll apply for my waiver and see what they say. All Americans should file for a waiver, inundate them.
Yeah, a violation of the 14th. But only the corrupt can say what the 14th means anymore.
Some pigs are more equal than others......
Where I live, there is an item pricing law. We were told how stores that did not individually price items (as opposed to shelf pricing), were evil, how they didn't care about old people, etc. They made a law to stop the evil practice. However, a store can purchase a waiver from the state. I guess that makes it ok. It's one of my pet peeves. Same thing going on here I guess.
Let’s give the country a “waiver” and repeal the damn thing.
Obamacare is so wonderful waivers are being granted to the very groups that worked hardest to pass it????? Folks, parallel universe Bizarro world has arrived!
Where does the 14th Amendment’s “Equal Protection” clause come into play here for the rest of us?
It doesn’t. It’s the Chicago way.
Sorta reminds me of the granting of Pardons such as the Bent One did when Denise Richards was accomodating for a Quid Pro Quo....
How is this any different, when Big Donors are suddenly exempt from Law that applies to the rest of us?
Seems in Obamahville, “all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.”
It's how Algore made his millions...
The Clinton Administration raised political extortion to a high art. Threaten a regulation...collect campaign cash...withdraw proposed regulation.
In this regard, the Obama administration is a piker.
You ask an Excellent question!
I would say both.
