Caan, who appeared in the classic mobster film "The Godfather", even offered to stand bail for alleged Mafia hitman Andrew "Andy Mush" Russo.
He revealed the alleged killer is godson to his son Scott, star of the TV crime series Hawaii 50.
The 76-year-old Colombo family crime boss was among the more than 125 suspected mob members seized in a series of coordinated raids across New York and New Jersey last week.
The takedown was the biggest operation mounted by US authorities to smash the five crime families running organised crime in New York.
Russo is alleged to have killed a rival in 1993 during a power struggle for control of the crime family.
Caan's close friendship with Russo was revealed as prosecutors successfully objected to bail.
In a letter read to the court in Brooklyn, 70 year-old Caan called Russo "as good a friend as any person could ask for."
The actor, who played hot tempered Sonny Corleone in the 1972 Godfather film, said: "I've known Andrew since 1972 and in all that time I have known him only as an unbelievable father, grandfather, great-grandfather and as good a friend as any person could ask for." ....

Nobody is alleging that mafiosi aren’t good family-men, James.
Dirt is dirt....
Maybe next, NY can go bust up the Working Families Party.....
This reinds me of the story of actor Jerry Orbach of “Law & Order” fame.
Jerry was close friends with “Crazy” Joe Gallo when Gall was killed by a rival mob family.
Jerry called him one of his close friends also.
“The mafia has been well cracked down on. In terms of National Security, terrorists are our biggest problem, the 70-year-old (Caan) said. The mafia made money doing the same job the cities were doing cloning bids, building buildings... They only kill each other, not that I’m condoning it.”

Does not compute. The alleged killer may be godfather to his son Scott not Godson.
Good catch. Sloppy writing.
Was the article written by someone named Luca???
Ba Da Bing Ba Da Boom, they blow his brains out over your nice Ivy League suit.
"An actor who played a mafia hitman in "The Sopranos" also turned up at the court hearing to support Russo.
Federico Castelluccio sat in the public gallery and was acknowledged by Russo who waved to him."
“Sonny, God rest his soul was a good soldier but a bad Don....”
“I think your brain is going soft with all that comedy you are playing with that young girl.”
That photo was always kinda hard for Sinatra to explain
Ben Segal was a pretty nice guy most times
I remember him telling a contractor building his place in Vegas after some mess up the contractor made.
He was sure Segal would kill him,he said no,we just kill each other
