GOP Leaders: Bachmann’s Speech Is Not the Party’s Response

GOP Leaders: Bachmann’s Speech Is Not the Party’s Response

By Danny Yadron

Republican congressional leaders say they have no problem with Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann giving a response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday night. But they point out she’s not delivering the party’s official reaction

That privilege was given to Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, one of Congress’s biggest budget hawks. House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Mr. Ryan on Friday, and hours later, Ms. Bachmann, a favorite of the tea party crowd, said she would give her own response, live-streamed on the Tea Party Express website.

The Bachmann speech won’t start until Mr. Ryan finishes, a Tea Party Express spokesman said. Still, Ms. Bachmann’s address underscores the division between the Republican establishment and the party’s activist wing.

“We at the Tea Party Express felt that the tea party movement needed a strong voice in Washington, and to know that our views are being heard no matter what President Obama says in his address,” the group’s spokesman, Levi Russell, wrote in an email. At least parts of Ms. Bachmann’s speech will be carried on network television.

Wonder if she’s setting herself up as part of a third party ticket should the Republican nominee in 2012 not meet all the ideological purity tests of her perceived constituency (which is all but certain).

My bigger issue is with Amy Kremer and Tea Party Express. Hugh Hewitt has had some not so nice things to say about Tea Party Express. He really went after them when they hooked up with CNN this year for a GOP presidential debate.

Actually, I think two responses will be terrific. The more people hear the common sense opposing Obmama....the better. The one I’m REALLY anxiously waiting to hear is Paul Ryan. I think he can tear Obama’s words to shreds in a very plain-talking, common sense manner that all people can understand.

The focus is on the economy and getting the deficit under control. I think Ryan has a little more experience in crunching numbers than Bachmann does.

I'm very familiar with the tea party. Not sure what the Tea Party is. Care to enlighten me and tell me who it's leader is? Amy Kremer? Michele Bachmann? I know the real tea party doesn't have a leader. And I have no problem with Rubio not wanting the tea party co-opted by Washington politicians. If Marco Rubio votes in a way that supports tea party values I could care less if he joins a tea party caucus or not.

"Just refusing to vote for it, I don't think that's really a strategy," he said, noting that a failure to raise the ceiling could result in the nation defaulting on its debts to investors. "

Will the debt ceiling be raised? Does it have to be raised? Yes."

The above Paul Ryan quote, if not actual proof of Rhinocity, does indicate wrong-headedness on this issue.

We must force the government to hold the line on spending and find other ways to fund our debts. Is there a single Freeper out there that does not believe that the government has vast holdings that could be sold to raise revenue thereby saving us money and increasing our freedom?

I think it is time the government held a garage sale.

Let her speak for me!

RE :” I'd love to know what the Tea Party Express thinks Paul Ryan won't say that Michele Bachmann will?

Same thought. That will be the interesting part. I will decide if it was a good idea AFTER the speeches.

One side thought about Ryan unrelated to Bachmann. He is proposing changes to SS and medicare that while may be necessary, would be political suicide by Republicans if attempted alone without significant Democrat support.

One set of commentators on NBC/MSNBC are baiting Republicans to go after cutting entitlements first including libs Joe Scarbouro, Gregory and Matthews. The other group of MSNBC progressives Schultz, Maddow, Cenk Uygur are all beating the drum for seniors daily warning them that Republicans want to cut ‘their’ entitlements to pay for tax cuts for ‘the rich’. This is an obvious political trap. Obama has to need those reforms for them to happen.

Before you can change SS their must be a common understanding that much of it is being funded by the general treasury, more borrowed money.

I hope not. I'd love to support her in 2012 but only if she runs as a Republican. 3rd parties aren't winning national elections anytime soon and a 3rd party in 2012 will guarantee Obama a 2nd term.

“I think two responses will be terrific.”

I agree. Americans can hear what a Marxist has to say, then what a mealy-mouthed weasel has to say, and then what an American has to say. Let them compare.

“I’m very familiar with the tea party. Not sure what the Tea Party is.”

Which is it? You’re familiar but you’re not? You are right, the real tea party does not have a leader. The Republican Party has a leader and look where that got us. It appears as though you are still making excuses for Republicans. The Republicans, mostly RINOS have had their chance. Now it time for them to get out of the way.

Problem is Bachmann's speech will get all the attention, except maybe from Fox News and conservative blogs. But you know the MSM will focus on her, especially if Ryan gives a great response and Bachmann throws some red meat in hers to get Chris Matthews undies in a bunch. That's why I think dual speeches is not a good idea. Let Michele go on Fox or any of the networks after and comment on it. Then she can still get her message out, she can still speak for tea partiers but it won't be considered competing against Paul Ryan.

Frankly, ALL I’m going to listen to is Paul Ryan and Michelle Bachman. Then Rush tomorrow. I have a copy of “We Were Soldiers” ready to replace SOTU.

Thank you for the links. I very much like Paul Ryan. And Michelle Bachman. That they are speaking on the same night doesn’t bother me and that she will be speaking after Paul Ryan is fine with me, too. They are on the same side. Some are losing sight of that.
Paul Ryan is the right person to talk plainly and get in the weeds on the budget numbers. I will also be interested in specifics that Congresswoman Bachman can offer.

To me, "Tea Party" with capital letters represents an official party. I'm not aware there is one. Though I'm sure Amy Kremer and Tea Party Express would like to think they are.

I agree about the Tea Party Express. I receive their e-mails and totally lambasted them when they were crowing about the CNN hookup for a debate. I told them they must be OUT OF THEIR minds to have teamed up with them. Told them they do NOT speak for me and to stop trying to be the “leader” of the Tea Party as I do not want ANY so called leader. No response from them, of course. Michelle Bachman should have a good speech, AFTER Ryan’s. We’re very proud of Paul Ryan here in Packerland. He’s young and will learn some of the finer points of politics, but he’s doing a great job so far.
I cannot stand the Kumbaya mix-em-up seating for the SOTU. Have called senators and house members and carefully stated that I am sickened that the GOP is falling for this. Read history - I believe during the time the communists in Europe were dwindling in numbers, in crowds or seated functions, they dispersed themselves in a diamond pattern amongst the many, to give the appearance of great power. Duh. Ya think the Dems just might be doing this? GOP leaders have not a clue.

I love Michele, but I think this is a mistake.

No, it is, along with Ryan, a double-barreled response.

I don't see what the problem is. I think we are all big enough that allowing another response to Obama is a plus.

The GOP benefited greatly from the Tea Parties of 2009 and 2010.

They should welcome this with open arms and get down to business.

We are waiting, and while we are waiting we are seeing the GOP kowtowing to Obama. We want results and if they are too worried about the opinion of the MSM, they will not see good results in 2012.

I don’t know the answer to your question. But I do know that should the Republicans nominate one of their favorites, Mc Cain, Mitt, Huck, ect. I will either vote third party or leave the Presidential slot blank. I might might, just to piss off the Republican establishment, write in palin.
