Former state Rep. Jeffrey Perry has been hired to become a Barnstable County "special sheriff" after his failed bid to capture the congressional seat for Cape Cod, the Herald has learned.
Perry, a former police officer and longtime public safety advocate, will earn $110,000 a year to work under James Cummings, the Barnstable County Sheriff. Cummings told the Herald that Perry will start today. The job puts Perry next in line to become the sheriff for the Cape.
"I had talked to Jeff Perry about this position before his run for Congress because of the self-imposed eight-year term limit he had put on himself. I really think we can use his eight-years as a state rep to help us with the Legislature and his experience as a lawyer for contractual issues we face here on a day-to-day basis, Cummings said.
Cummings, a retired state trooper, said Perry is in line to replace him if he were to become "incapacitated."
Perry pointed to his legislative record as a member of the Public Safety Committee. He had authored bills that extended mandatory minimums; criminal background checks on illegal immigrants; and advocated for legislation that languished in the State House such as Jessicas Law and Melissas Law.
"If you look at my legislative history I have been very involved in public safety bills at the State House, Perry told the Herald. "Im looking forward to staying active in an area that has been the central point of my entire life."
Perry, a former Wareham police officer, has a law enforcement management degree from Babson College. His tenure has not been without scandal.
Last year, controversy swirled around Perrys time in the early 1990s as a Wareham police sergeant, when on two separate occasions a subordinate police officer, conducted illegal strip searches of two teenage girls, aged 14 and 16. Perry supported that officer, Scott Flanagan, up until Flanagan entered a guilty plea. Perry said he assumed Flanagan was innocent.
The issue was raised by former Norfolk County District Attorney William R. Keating during the Congressional race for the 10th District seat. Cummings said he was "not naive" that the issue would be raised because of his hire. Keating won that race over the Republican.
"I knew it would come up which is why I hired a private investigator. That investigation turned up exactly what the state police investigation turned up at the time of the incidents: there was no evidence Jeff Perry had any idea the strip searches had happened and was not involved," Cummings said.

Convenient.

Enough said. I could never vote for the guy. He will always side with the State institutions.
Oh and on a second issue...
What is the deal with cops making $110 k per year?
I know it’s Mass..but you think they could mention the party label at least once..
She did, in the next to last paragraph, plus I noted that Perry failed in his attempt to turn the district red.
New Congressman William Keating—Democrat
New Sheriff’s assistant Jeff Perry—Republican.
he’s a Republican.
County prison guard. Staff flunkie. Paper shuffler. NOT cop.
Anyway. Kind of pathetic in a way. The guy’s a lawyer, not that hack, third rate lawyers are behind every tree in Massachusetts. He went to Babson College. Glorified mediocre high school cum hair dressing.
So, what’s he going to do? This is a Republican hack, helping another Republican hack. There are only two types of Republican talent in this state. Rich Democrats that don’t want to brush up against Democrats, and want to cut the climb up the pig ladder of trough feeders...so they join the less, a bit, Democrat Republican Party( Romney/Weld ), and no money guys, which are a bit better as they know what the tax rate, fees, fines due to people, unlike drunk Weld, or two years and out Prince Fauntleroy Mitt Romney.
I trust this guy about as far as I can throw him. I won't go as far as to say I'm glad he lost (which I predicted), but I'm not sad either.
“R” or “D”, another example of the hackarama that is Massholechusetts.
Very, very well put!
The government employees/government retirees on this site will come along any minute to support these super bloated government salaries....

Being a “real cop” is not a bonus as far as I’m concerned. If your job is to wake up every day, put on a uniform, put your union thug card in your pocket and enforce tax stamps for corrupt politicians.
No knock warrants, spend your day dreaming up new and exciting ways to circumvent probable cause. It takes a real special person to get up every day and screw over your neighbors under the guise of “protect and serve”. Oh my favorite is gunning down citizens walking out of Cosco based on a call that somebody had a pistol peaking out of his shirt.
So being a cop isn’t a calling card that earns any kudos. It just means you are willing to enforce the will of the State at the point of a gun.
Plenty of current and retired LEO who are willing to ultimately put you in jail for not wearing a seat belt.
The contraversy involving the teenage girls is what croaked his chance at congressional seat. But he had some other skeletons in his closet. He flouted a mail order degree from an unaccredited diploma mill as a qualification in his run for representative and on his resume. He comes accross as a corner cutter and just a bit shady. Still, he would be a damn sight better than any Democrat.
VERY shady. Sad thing is, if he had been a Rat, he would have most likely been elected. Shady’s ok for Rats.
I like sheriffs. Police are the public housing of security. Worried about your security? Protect yourself. Got a lot of stuff? Hire someone, build something, pay someone.
Other than yourself, and your stuff, what else is there for police? They work for the state. Not the citizens. If they are told to round up the Jews, or Tea Partiers, 99% will obey.
That’s right. If they get a bench warrant, they will execute. No questions asked. They will sleep like babies because it’s just not their problem.
