Tea Party Activist Takes Over New Hampshire Republicans

DERRY, N.H. — A rancorous fight to lead the New Hampshire Republican Party through next year’s presidential race ended Saturday with an upset victory by a conservative activist backed by members of the Tea Party and other grassroots groups.

Jack Kimball, a relative newcomer to party politics who ran for governor last year as a fiscal and social conservative, beat Juliana Bergeron, who leads the Cheshire County Republicans and was backed by former Gov. John Sununu, the outgoing state party chairman.

The race was closely watched as a sign of how much influence Tea Party groups will exert here in the lead-up to New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary, tentatively scheduled for Feb. 14, 2012.

Mr. Sununu said Ms. Bergeron was a proven leader and fundraiser who could unite all of the party’s factions. In a strongly worded speech before the vote, Mr. Sununu said he was worried about divisions within the party and warned that its leaders must not alienate more moderate members and independents, who make up about 40 percent of the state’s voters.

“We don’t want to be seen as a party that’s a sliver of a party,” he said. “We want to be seen as a party that welcomes all views.”

Mr. Sununu, who orchestrated the huge Republican sweep here last fall, also exhorted the committee members not to alienate any Republican presidential candidates leading into the 2012 primary, saying it was imperative for New Hampshire to provide a “comfortable environment” for all.

“The worst thing for the New Hampshire first-in-the-nation primary,” he said, “is for people to feel this is not a place they want to participate.”

2007 Fort Dix attack plot

A group of six radical Islamist[1] men, allegedly plotting to stage an attack on the Fort Dix military base in New Jersey, United States, were arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on May 7, 2007. They were subsequently charged with planning an attack against U.S. soldiers. The alleged aim of the six men was said to be to "kill as many soldiers as possible".[2] Their trial began on October 20, 2008. [3]

Opening arguments were presented on October 20, 2008.
Assistant U.S. Attorney William Fitzpatrick said the defendants were inspired by jihad saying "Their motive was to defend Islam. Their inspiration was Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden.

This should hurt Romney, as he is running away from the Tea Party folks.

Romney just won the straw poll conducted amongst this group. However a lot of Romney’s favorability comes from him being a neighbor and name recognition from that aspect, imo.

Traditionally NH is a boots on the ground campaign state. They don’t like those that come in and hold a few big rallies and move on. They want the candidates to come in and mingle with them at small venues like coffee shops, festivals, etc. I think I remember reading that McCain spent as much as 50 weekends in NH in the two years leading up to the 08 primary.

I guess the questions becomes do any of the GOP hopefuls care to make that type committment in NH? If not then it may well be a crap shoot and based upon who we read about the most rather than meeting them personally and shaking their hand.

Well, they don't have a problem alienating the 60% of Conservatives.

The I's and M's are going to just have to learn to get more Constitutional that's all there is to it!

What a load of bunk! It was done in spite of Sununu and the run of the mill liberal leaning Republicans.

And can the idea of making it comfortable for all. The ones that are uncomfortable need to get on board our Constitutional Republic!
