Mystery surrounds Idaho winner of $190 million
MSNBC ^ | January 22, 2011 | Nichoals Geranios

Holly Lahti burst into the spotlight a week ago in a feel-good story about a single mother who won a $190 million Mega Millions jackpot.

Then came the mugshot: a thin young woman with disheveled brown hair, sporting a black eye and cuts and bruises on her face and neck. It turned out she was separated from a man who court records indicated had abused her, and now has a possible claim to some of the money through a quirk in Idaho law.

Ah, he’s been arrested for drug stuff he’ll likely OD with whatever money he gets. Give him some and be free woman.

Agree to pay him in annual $5 million installments, and if he dies the rest goes to her or the kids.

Good idea!!! Never thought about paying him in installments. On that kind of money and the problem he’s had with drugs, he’d probably OD in no time flat.

Sure. I don't begrudge anyone money -- I want to be clear on that. I'm just saying that a lot of people who don't understand money, don't work for the money and just have money fall into their laps, people like that often get into trouble, create sad lives for themselves, and perhaps never think that they might use the money to benefit others.

But, of course, in many cases (and perhaps in this woman's case) people do wonderful things with their money.

I guess my point is that at some point, I think it's reasonable to say "I have plenty. Maybe I don't have to jump through hoops trying to get more." But I know Obama might say something like that, so I guess I'll stop here. It's her money, it's not for me to make any kind of recommendation.

She can afford a really good anti-thug insurance policy now.

Idaho state income tax is 7.8% until the bill to
lower it to 4.9% passes. I’m watching my pay
stubs to see when that takes effect.

Some states base child support on the income/net worth of both parents using a chart assuming both are responsible for the support of the child. If one parent has or earns a lot of money and the other one is low income, child support will be low or none at all.

“Pay him off, get rid of him, and leave the area, that would be my advice.”

Send Vinnie and Bruno around to “make him an offer he can’t refuse” then he leaves the area and you live large. And for God’s sake don’t take up with another abusive loser.

“Some states base child support on the income/net worth of both parents...”

...understood. It’s the lack of obligation that this scumbag seems to show for his children that I’m disgusted with.

Oh yes I hear that. I think all non-custodial parents should pay child support, even if the custodial parent is wealthy- just as a sense of responsibility. There are some odd laws out there though.

According to the article, her Facebook page instructs people to send in only one plea or pitch for help. I already sent mine in about ending the cruelty of cat juggling.

A woman who worked with my wife in Bryan, Texas back in the mid 90’s won 9 milliond in the lottery with a 20 year payout. Turns out ten years earlier her husband had tried to divorce her but she refused to sign the papers. So, he shows up and wants his half. She refused to cash the ticket and re-filed for divorce. It went to court and the head of the lottery testified that the ticket was of value the instant the last number was announced. Therefore the man was entitled to half. I think he settled for a million in cash and she paid the taxes on it. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer woman.

Funny thing is I knew about her husband wanting half before she did. His cousin told me he was waiting for her to cash the ticket. Apparently he told a lot of people and she found out.

So, youse think your small donation to FR won't go very far?
Here's an offer you can't refuse!

I know some people feel bad about donating a small amount like $5 or $10 but heck, if that’s what you’ve got, that’s what you’ve got! I don’t know many that would turn their nose up at it :-)

So I’ll propose that if you want to donate something between $5 and $20, when you either contact me or someone pings me that something under $20 was donated, I’ll throw in the extra up to $20. So if you donate $7.50 I’ll donate $12.50.

I don’t have a lot since I already sent in an extra amount this time, but let’s cap it at $110.

So get to getting please!

*HUGE FReeper HUGS* to all that support this wonderful website, its founders and the patriots that visit here!

The key to the story is that we're supposed to feel sorry for her because she may have to give him 95million. Boo Hoo. Had the tables been turned and he won, you know she'd be asking for her half. The law is the law. Period.

Maybe now she'll get that divorce.

Here’s hoping these two get back together and use part of their windfall to buy a Hawaiian beach house right next door to Barry and Michelle.
