I think the conservative position on immigration should be that we have no problem with an open border if we eliminate the welfare state giveaways that encourage people to come here for goodies.
I personally think that we’d be better off with immigrants who are part of the system rather than immigrants that hide in the shadows. I do think we do ourselves a disservice when we make it appear that we just don’t like immigrants, period, which is the way it’s portrayed, even if that’s not what we intend. We can argue until we’re blue in the face that all we want to do is secure the border, and the media will always portray that as “Republicans hate Hispanics.”
Why not turn it around and argue for open borders but use that argument to show the irresponsibility of the socialist policies we have in place? Make it a package deal - we grant amnesty to all who are already here and we open the border, and in the same bill, we eliminate or drastically reduce socialist giveaways. Make the Democrats play some defense on the issue.
NO MORE BUSHES IS RIGHT!
The current alien invasion from the south serves BOTH the elites who run Mexico – and many of the OTHER states of Central and South America — and the political ruling class who increasingly run the United States:
· It takes pressure off the 60 or so families who control approximately 80% of the wealth in Mexico. Without the northern “safety valve” (the United States) for their poor, those poor MIGHT be inclined to do what America’s early colonists found it necessary to do: Revolt! Parenthetically, that would be MY suggestion for them: Instead of fleeing here – and converting “here” to a larger, more poverty infested version of “there,” they ought to stay there and make “there” into their version of “here,” whatever that would be. Revolutions ARE messy and there are no guarantees that they will produce the desired result. But – according to one T. Jefferson – they are often necessary. Never forget that THIS country was born in revolution!

· For the NAFTA/CAFTA coveting US national ruling class – especially those who, in varying degrees, quest after some sort of One-World utopia run by guess who? – it provides yet another level of insecurity and tension among the indigenous populace which can be used to justify new and more draconian limits to freedom here. Instead of securing the borders, allow millions of illegals to come in and when the natives become alarmed, require a national ID card. “Your papers, please!” will soon become a phrase familiar to all. It’s Mr. Franklin’s trade of freedom for (false) security. It’s also the time-tested Hegelian Dialectic the One-Worlders have successfully worked like a rented mule.
While they occasionally squabble among themselves, the elites of history have ALL had one thing in common: They will do ANYTHING to remain in charge. And throughout that history, except for the 230 year-old experiment in freedom called “America,” most of the men who have walked the earth have lived as slaves to these elites whether they call themselves kings, emperors, potentates, sultans, czars – or presidents.
Get ready, folks. Unless some SERIOUS changes are made and the handful of Americans who CARE about liberty get involved, that history will almost certainly repeat here.
Now for the SPECIFICS of the matter:
My take on Bush’s role in all of this was:
1. His long and apparently positive experience with the large hispanic population in Texas is largely responsible for his inaction on this alien invasion. And why wouldn’t HIS experience with them be positive as he traveled in the highest, best-educated circles among them, not the Hispanic gang bangers and pine-straw spreaders...
2. Boy Jorge Bush was cared for by a Hispanic nanny for many years while his daddy was running Zapata Oil (into the ground).
3. His brother Jeb is married to a native of Mexico (the daughter of a migrant worker) and his nieces and nephews are mixed blood. And before you scream “ethnocentric bigot” at me, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. But that fact — and items 1 and 2 – DO predispose him to a warm and fuzzy feeling for folks from south of the Rio Grande.
And if — in some strange and metastasizing American desire for a new royal family dynasty — Jeb or his son should win the White House in some future presidential beauty contest designed to divert the American electorate every four years, I’d bet that HIS activities toward this alien invasion will make W’s behavior look like a warm-up exercise.
Any vestige of Western European culture — the culture MY great-grandparents and probably yours brought here after standing in line at places like Ellis Island, being interrogated, deloused and recorded — will be a distant memory – IF it’s remembered at all.
Who was going to enforce all those requirements, the same people who enforce the border? They were empty promises by an elitist who put our country on the road to ruin.
Start by taxing all money going to Mexico at 50%.
It’s hardly Bush derangement syndrome to say we don’t need a third Bush in the White House. American politics has turned into too much of a hereditary dynasty as it is.
Jeb’s major in college was Latin American Studies.
If the GOP wants to attract Hispanics, why not bring in the ones who come here legally and contribute, rather than the ones who come here illegally and lower the standard of living?

That sent me to my world atlas, where I found that: Yep, Spain (the cultural template for much of Latin America) IS in Western Europe. Just not the northern, Anglo part.

We ran that experiment in southern California. Large sections of American suburbia, in fact entire towns, were transformed into Mexican barrios.
Once the process hits a tipping point the change happens faster than you can believe. Goodbye American suburbia, welcome to the land of graffiti and spanish and bars on the windows.

I agree. And I think it's got to extend beyond Latin Americans - we have lots of people who come from the Middle East and places like the Balkans under "family reunification," which is a big scam, and go directly on welfare.
Immigrants in the 19th century didn't have to meet a lot of requirements and in many ways we would consider things pretty lax, but one thing they did have to have was someone who would support them when they got here. And that "someone" wasn't the welfare department.
Also, I think we need short-term permits specifically for Latin Americans, because many of them actually don't want to stay. They just want to make money and then go home after a couple of years, but possibly with the option of coming back later for a couple of more years. If we make it easier for people who want to leave (but possibly come back later) to do so legally, I think we'll see an end to people-smuggling and all of the crime that comes with that.
Unfortunately for you it’s the northern, Anglo part that settled the American colonies and is the basis of American culture. Other than that your argument might have made sense somehow.

The Bushes display the sort of woolly headed sentimentalism that passes for thought among liberals.
They feel benevolent in opening wide their country’s doors to an unending tide of the world’s poor, especially the poor that share no cultural affinity with the historic American people.
Conservatives once used the lamp of experience to guide their feet. Experience has shown that the strong latino culture of Mexico and points south continues unabated when it is transplanted into the US. It colonizes rather than assimilates.
California was a golden land for Americans a generation ago. In my time here it has been transformed into a multilingual, multicultural mess that Americans look to move away from. And a lot of the decline in California is a direct result of the huge tide of illegal aliens from Mexico, a situation facilitated by the likes of George Bush.

Even though I am a recent sign up, I have been lurking for many years.
And I think Free Republic is far more conservative than the Rino elite on immigration, and I have yet to hear anybody here complain about legal immigrants. Many here are actually far more liberal on immigration than I am.
This notion that conservatives are anti-immigrant is a myth created by the liberal media and Latino fascist groups aligned with the Democratic Party.
But one thing I have to concede is that we allow the liberal media to define us and we don’t do enough to fight back against their slander.
There is nothing racist or anti-immigrant about being pro-rule of law.
Just like every country in the world we have every right to define our immigration system as we see fit and to have defensible borders.
The illegals don’t dictate to us, not now, not ever.
