Town of Stockton — An investigation is under way after 200 dead cows were found in a field in the Town of Stockton.
The Portage County sheriff's office says the owner of the cattle has been working with a local veterinarian and it's believed the animals died from the IBR/BVD virus. The virus can cause respiratory and reproductive problems.
WSAW reports samples from the dead cows have been sent to Madison for testing.
Authorities say there is no threat to humans or other animals.

You don’t suddenly have 200 cows fall over and die of phenomena. Never happens. Probably a sack of nitrate.
200 head? All dropped at once? That’s some virus.

Unless they are falling from the sky like the birds.
There really is no way "authorities" can definitively say that until they know what caused the deaths.
Kinda like "authorities" saying that an event isn't terror-related even before the gunsmoke blows out of the parking lot.
Or a dead cat (or other flesh) in TMR rations.
We saw a case in Nevada where one of my fellow hay producers ended up baling a feral cat into a 2000# bale. The bales were shipped down to a central valley (CA) dairy where they used TMR. The bale was dropped into the hay grinder, ground up and mixed with the other stuff (corn, bean curd, etc) and then put into the truck to put out into the bunks.
Next day, there’s 28 head dead as a wedge from botulism.
Weren’t samples of the Arkansas blackbirds sent to a lab in Wisconsin to be tested?

Prussic acid would be my first thought.
It was probably a conservative that listened to Rush Limbaugh and SARAH PALIN and Glenn Beck that killed them......

I have seen it before in Minnesota. One herd owner lost nearly 300 head in just one 25 below zero night. (1983) Not much snow that winter also.
Cows in Wisconsin means female, means dairy cows. They are only meat when they get put down for age and low production and sold to McDonald’s. And, any carnivore can immediately tell the difference between steer and cow.
