When talk radio hosts use harshly divisive language, "The advertisers should shut them down," Governor Lincoln Chafee said this morning.
Chafee said the solution to the vitriolic rhetoric -- which some have linked to the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords over the weekend -- is for people to stop paying for it, including not buying books from people who use such language.
Chafee made his comments in response to reporters' questions after a meeting on health care. He noted that he had been a target of violence-tinged criticism himself. In 2006, conservative commentator Ann Coulter wrote a column, "They shot the wrong Lincoln," and calling then-Senator Chafee a "half-wit."
Chafee made national news earlier this week when he announced that he would not go on talk radio and would ban state employees from doing so.
The ban came because talk radio is essentially "ratings-driven, for-profit programming" that was not appropriate use of state employees' time, Chafee said....

Chafee’s right - Stop paying for vitriolic commentary - Defund NPR NOW!
Oh. Never mind.
“You forget NPR”
No I didn’t. That’s why I said “Virtually”. Also, I think there are some community access stations that aren’t ratings-driven or for-profit.
Is he declaring a tax holiday?
One of Providence’s talk stations is WHJJ AM 920, owned by Clear Channel. They have one local talk show in the morning (Helen Glover formerly of Survivor) and then Beck, Rush, Hannity, etc—syndicated by Premiere, which is part of Clear Channel. A few years ago Clear Channel decided to try Air America on AM 920, and the ratings plummeted. The program director declared “the Air America experiment is over” and they went to conservative talk. No doubt most listeners who wanted libtalk could already find it, on taxpayer funded NPR...
Dividing whom from whom, exactly, anyway?
The libs have all of TV, which has a much larger audience than radio.
Which means, nobody listens to them, so they might as well not be there.
Works for me.
The Providence Journal? AP will pick this up soon as it fits their template.
I pray that some day they come to their senses and let Buddy Cianci run the whole state.
He too, is one tomato short of a salad, but he certainly did an excellent job with Providence, personal peccadillitos aside.
I wouldn’t have thought Chaffee would support shutting down ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC for their divisive, vitriolic coverage blaming Sarah Palin for the Arizona murders.
Or witless!
witless - (of especially Chafee) lacking sense or understanding or judgment nitwitted, soft-witted, senseless stupid - lacking or marked by lack of intellectual acuity
Now don’t go confusing the governor.
He said "target", heh heh heh...
Ban him!
I detest these people.
“Now dont go confusing the governor.”
I won’t. I promise.
“Now dont go confusing the governor.”
I won’t. I promise. I see, in rereading the article, he was just referring to “talk radio hosts.” So dangerous, divisive rhetoric is OK on TV, except for Fox.
It was me who was confused. The gov has it all figgered out.
Yeah, but we have them figgered out squared.
He lives on the teat of free enterprise, he is advocating boycotting businesses that do not dance the Marxist Two-Step of unions, government and Lefty Media and Academia.
Chaffee is a maggot.
I disagree completely, so watch Hannity’s Alzheimer’s-type rrepetition ion and enjoy.
