According to trauma surgeon Peter Rhee, MD, MPH, Giffords was showing continued improvement as her sedation was substantially reduced...""We've really been able to reduce her sedation and as a result she has become more and more spontaneous,"...""She is now able to even feel her wounds herself. She can fix her gown and make very specific movements, so she is making tremendous progress."

Doesn't heavy sedation make it hard for someone to open their eyes?

Given that this happened as it did - had it happened elsewhere any of us, or any of our loved ones, could have been walking past such a gathering and been laying dead or wounded in a parking lot - perhaps, for just one thread, we could simply be thankful that one more of the victims - against, it seems, all odds - many have a chance for a life as a functioning human being?
