As lawmakers in Washington engage this week in moments of silence and tributes to Representative Gabrielle Giffords and the other casualties, they should realize that they have the power to reduce the number of these sorts of horrors, and their lethality.

To do so, they will need to stand up to the National Rifle Association and its allies, whose lobbying power continues to grow despite the visceral evidence that the groups have made the country a far more dangerous place. Having won a Supreme Court ruling establishing a right to keep a firearm in the home, the gun lobby is striving for new heights of lunacy, waging a campaign to legalize the possession of a gun in schools, bars, parks, offices, and churches, even by teenagers.

It reflexively opposes even mild, sensible restrictions — but if there is any reason left in this debate, the latest mass shooting should force a retreat. Is there anyone, even the most die-hard gun lobbyist, who wants to argue that a disturbed man should be able to easily and legally buy a Glock to shoot a congresswoman, a judge, a 9-year-old girl?

So it begins... the New York Times' latest anti-gun jihad. Have failed to make the case for clamping down on conservative free speech rights, the Gray Lady is peddling the tired old gun control nostrum. Template? Its so predictable!

That would be the same as wishful or intuitive proof.

It is the precise opposite of "evidence" based on careful observation and empirically and unbiasedly sorting through the facts.

(For example, violent crime goes UP when guns are confiscated. That's a true statement that goes directly against "visceral" evidence.)

Points to recall: 1. The police didn't arrive until several people had been murdered, including a 9 year old girl, and many more wounded. 2) The police didn't arrive until the people, including several senior citizens, had subdued the gunman, including a wounded lady in her '60s who threw herself across the gunman's legs and grabbed his next clip. 3) Before we implement any further gun control legislation, I want a guarantee that a police force will be on location to prevent crime and protect citizens. Failing that, Congress shouldn't even go there...
