Seven districts affected are Kalianda, Rajabasa, Katibung, Sidomulyo, Ketapang, Sragi and Palas. On Monday ash from Anak Krakatau continued to cover residential areas in parts of Banten province and South Lampung. If this one goes like it’s ancestor did around 630 or the 1880’s, it could be a couple of long winters up ahead.

Main article: 1883 eruption of Krakatoa
Evolution of the islands around Krakatoa (French).

While seismic activity around the volcano was intense in the years preceding the cataclysmic 1883 eruption, a series of lesser eruptions beginning in mid-June 1883 led up to the disaster. The volcano released huge plumes of steam and ash lasting until late August.

On August 27, a series of four huge explosions almost entirely destroyed the island. The explosions were so violent that they were heard 3,500 km (2,200 mi) away in Perth, Western Australia and the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius, 4,800 km (3,000 mi) away.[5] The pressure wave from the final explosion was recorded on barographs around the world, which continued to register it up to 5 days after the explosion. The recordings show that the shockwave from the final explosion reverberated around the globe 7 times in total.[10] Ash was propelled to a height of 80 km (50 mi). The sound of the eruption was so loud it was said that if one was within ten miles, they would go deaf.

I've been planning for years now, to read that bestseller about this volcano, but simply never got around to it. It's a SUPER volcano, right?

It's bad news, but not a Super Volcano. Krakatoa was similar to Mt Pinatubo in 1991 which was a VEI-6.

There's a VEI index to measure volcanic eruptions. The Supervolcanos are level 8 and there's few of them. I think three are active. Yellowstone, Lake Toba (Sumatra), and Lake Taupo (New Zealand).

VEI-7's also cause extreme damage. The last one was Tambora which caused the year without a summer in 1816. The only other known or highly suspected VEI7's after the birth of Christ was the Lake Taupo eruption AD 186. The other major VEI-7 was Santorini which destroyed the Minoan civilization. Some think Krakatoa went up in 536 even bigger than 1883.

VEI-6 - Mt Pinatubo, Krakatoa (1883).

VEI-5 - Mt St Helens (1980)

VEI-4 - Mt Merapi and Eyjafjallajökull from 2010

VEI-3 - Mt Etna 2002-2003

VEI-2 - Mt Hood 1865

VEI-1 - Kilauea currently.

VEI-0 - Mauna Loa 1984

Sorry this is an old article from last year.

Thank goodness! I was just about to cancel my St. Olaf's Day Party and the order for Lutefisk. Whew!

About 1500 years ago Krakatoa, Sumatra and Java were all the same place ~ then BANG, two islands and a big ol' volcano.

Talk about a Huge Manatee!

Kramer: I’m sorry. I thought it was a legitimate charity. I didn’t know you’d get audited.

JERRY: I don’t blame you. I blame myself.

KRAMER: No, blame me.

JERRY: OK, I blame you.

KRAMER: Don’t blame me.

JERRY: What was I supposed to do? You knew I was on my first date with Elaine. You come barging in here asking me to contribute money for a volcano relief fund for krakatoa.

KRAMER: It was supposed to erupt.

...

ELAINE: I remember you donated to some volcano thing on our first date.

JERRY: Volcano? Really?

ELAINE: Oh, wait a minute. Don’t tell me that that was ...

JERRY: Something to drink?

ELAINE: What did you think, that would impress me?

JERRY: You got it ALL wrong. I was thinking only of the poor Krakatoans!

ELAINE: Like you’d make this donation for 50 bucks and I’d start tearing my clothes off?

JERRY: Those brave Krakatoans East of Java. who sacrifice so much for so long.

ELAINE: Now you’re being audited because of it. You see That’s Karma.

JERRY: No, that’s Krama.

And if it blows like last time (late 1800’s), the tsunami will make the last one look like a surfer’s wave. (Well, locally anyhow.)

I think by the time they realized their geographical error with the movie title, it was to expensive an error to correct. At least that is the story I heard long ago.

I think it is too soon after 1883 for a major blow up. It says the ash is going up about 1,800 feet. Not very impressive. Bears watching however. There are some interesting things going on with 4 volcanos in Columbia.
