Krakatau Volcano, Indonesia Eruptions from Krakatau volcano, Indonesia have forced the evacuation of tens of thousands residents. Seven districts affected are Kalianda, Rajabasa, Katibung, Sidomulyo, Ketapang, Sragi and Palas. On Monday ash from Anak Krakatau continued to cover residential areas in parts of Banten province and South Lampung. Visual observations showed ash emissions reaching a height of 600 m and drifting east. Ashfall has affected the operation of seismometers on the volcano. Fisherman and tourists are advised to stay at least 2 km from the volcano.

Has been for 2000 years or so...
The earlier explosion of Krakatau, literally blew the island apart, leaving a few of the now smaller surrounding bits of land as remnants. The lareg body of water is the sunken caldera of the volcano, as it collapsed into the ocean. As the site is a geological “hot spot” the earth’s mantle started to rebuild..the new island..Anak Krakatau, is the new volcano rising from the ocean floor. If it erupts with the same intensity as the earlir one..well..no one really knows....there was global winter in Europe..and the ash cloud circled the globe. Immediately, you could see a near total shut-down of trans-Pacific aviation...

I've been planning for years now, to read that bestseller about this volcano, but simply never got around to it. It's a SUPER volcano, right?

This isn’t a big eruption. 1800 foot high ash cloud isn’t very big. Probably more precautionary than anything else, it has been leading up to a larger eruption for the past several months now. Not much else available to me at the moment. BTW, they are worried about the coffee crop.
I’m a bit numb to spree killers too. I’m sorry for the congresswoman and the judge, the little girl breaks my HEART. But, if a politician gets killed, it’s a little like when a journalist gets killed in a war zone. I’m not going to give them some sort of grand memorial when hundreds of others die unreported. They are not royalty.
It may be...I’m not sure what the criteria is that defines a “super volcano”...super volcanoes, like the one under Yellowstone, tend to go off tens of thousands, hundreds if thousands, or years apart..Krakatoa’s been blowing its brains out every few hundred years...I think it’s so violent because it’s a part of the whole Pacific rim “Ring of Fire”
There are some remarkable scientific studies of the global effects of the last time Krakatoa erupted...to try and imagine what one of a similar intensity today would do is well..almost apocalyptic..

funny thing about this movie = krakatoa is actually to the WEST of java.
i seem to recall reading something about a five foot tall tsunami hitting ENGLAND after the original eruption.
