And that is sort what I am talking about.

Those folks want to claim membership to FR, but they don’t financially contribute. All the begging in the world isn’t going to change that. All the threats of FR potentially going away next quarter isn’t going to change that...

Why do “they” have so much sway in the operations of this site?

Fleeting thought across my mind...do they remind you of anyone in our society now? Using resources and the expense of “the rich?”

My suggestion is to allow a newbie to sign up and participate for a probation period. At the end of the period they can have the option to subscribe to maintain privileges or go to read only.

I think that's a good idea, as well.

I don't like the pay to post idea as it could create a traceable link to someone.

I make my donations through money orders that theoretically shouldn't be able to be traced back to me. Use cash to buy it and nobody knows who it's from in real life. You can put a post it note on the donation to indicate the FReeper from whence it came.
