"If FR dies, that’s that." - Jim Robinson [Jim's reply at post # 588]

FYI -

Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.

===

"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Don’t have the financial wherewithal."

"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."

"If FR dies, that’s that."

===

[To: paulycy]

Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.

It’s going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, there’s no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and there’s no guarantees we can cover this quarter’s expenses much less next quarter. We’re on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.

Throwing more money at the problem won’t solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, we’re not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and he’s pushing 40 now. He built these systems and he’s an expert in them.

And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no we’re not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and that’s for sure. And we don’t have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.

All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get ‘er done!! I’ll bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.

Hit it boys:

https://secure.freerepublic.com/donate/

And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

From which I infer that one way to keep more cash flowing would be to stop the silly “purges” that go on from time to time.

No. This isn't the Republican Big Tent.

If Beck is (hypothetical) so offended by SOME opinions here concerning Mormonism, then wouldn’t it follow that he would ask Jim to cease and desist from posting ANY articles from The Blaze. Yes I figured out that the Blaze is attempting to mirror FR, however it makes commentary untenable.

FR is a one of a kind site with underrated value.

Actually, I really wish every user would give $1/month. Then we'd be flush!

The problem is that not every account is an active member.

I went through a list of names from the NY message board recently and a huge chunk of names never even had one post. And I've been getting FReepmails from someone who keeps signing up and sending the exact same FReepmail, using up names. It keeps getting banned but keeps coming back. Although I did notice that this time when I clicked on its screen name I got a *Document does not exist on this server* instead of banned or suspended.

There are some names which are not active. My kids all have accounts but rarely use them. The one account my daughter set up never even worked, and yet the user name is registered. And then there are all those who have been banned.

So, all in all, it does not seem that there are as many active, participating members as there are registered screen names, by a long shot.

If there were some way of weeding out the signees who never posted a single thing, that would give a more realistic representation of where FR stands in membership who can actually support FR.

Also, speaking of forums, FR needs a serious functional upgrade to include such standard features as post formatting, editing, object insertion, emoticons, etc. These are basic capabilities that are extremely easy to implement.

Don't listen to this. Keep it simple, a lot of freepers are still on dial up. HTML rules. KISS-Keep it simple stupid. Open source rules.

As far as donations, a lot of people are to paranoid to donate. I would suggest a way of donating without revealing your identity, untraceable. The way I do it is with unsigned money orders. Call me paranoid.

Please don't listen to this. Save me from the useless emoticons. Make people work if they want cuteness contests.

Is it possible to come up with a Free Republic flag for flagpoles?? I wonder how many libs that would drive nuts?

Wanna make a liberal's head explode? Donate to Free Republic in their name! Then send them a note to let them know you did!

Microsoft Silverlight. Bleeding edge. ‘Nough said.

It's really not bleeding edge any more, but it's rare to see implemented (well). :) Thank you, though.

“Start an open source project.”

I’d could get on that. But take into consideration that, even with a released platform, moving the existing system would still be comparable to pulling a yatch with your teeth.

“...who are PHP programmers...”

Now you’re talking nonsense. We’re attempting to get out from the (alleged) mess in a Perl project. PHP would be no better.

“...open-source databases like PostgreSQL that are designed for heavy loads...”

Maybe an improvement beyond MySQL, if that’s what’s being used right now (I don’t remember having read about the current DB setup). But, as pointed out before, there’s no reason yet to say that’s the defining factor, and changing DBMS “just because” is the epitome of silly.

“...It’s lightweight, configurable and capable of heavy loads.”

Yeah, everybody says that. Most don’t really know what a “heavy load” is until it hits them in the head.

"Should be easy enough to find out how many people post on this site divided by costs. Then it would be a non-profit if Jim wanted that I suppose.

There is very little else other than Drudge and Fox that I use the computer for. But I always start at FR."

Business strategy tells us that:

1. For small businesses FOCUS on being NUMBER ONE in your market sector, that is define the sector and be No. 1 in it.

2. Innovate under the radar of big preditors

3.Go after lesser companies and offer better/faster/convenient services to take away their market share.

4. Make strategic alliances with other larger companies/groups in other markests that bring synergistic expansion.

You said: There is a problem with simply having FReepathons in which we pour money down a dark hole and never know specifically what we're getting for our money except a website that stumbles as much as much as it does.

This has been your stumbling block all along. No matter how often or who tells you what's going on it doesn't register. FR suffers attacks from the left. It isn't just kiddies doing it. We are a server short and have some slimed software. We are crippled but STILL running. We get MORE hits than MSNBC and yet you voice the same complaints over and over. You CANNOT see the miracle that is FR.

WE ARE HERE AND WILL STAY UNTIL COMPLAINERS AND THE ATTACKS FROM THE LEFT KILL US FOR GOOD.

I remember once I stuffed 5 dollar bills into an envelope with a strip of aluminum foil and a note to Jim.

I got a postcard back, (which is kind of wasteful I suppose)

A buck a month or $12 a year for the ability to post threads and use FReepmail would be a good start.

It may be that sometime we won't complete a fundraiser and that will be that.

I don't even want to think that. What a sad, sad day that would be.

When I joined, a fundraiser was going on and I thought it best that I become a monthly donor. Using paypal was easy and it was the least I could do.
