Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever said he does not understand why his friend and colleague, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, would suggest at a news conference following Saturday's shooting in Tucson that political ideology played a role in the tragedy.
At a press conference on Saturday, Dupnik said Arizona had become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry and that the vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the TV business should, given events, prompt America to do a little soul-searching.
In reference to Dupniks remarks, Sheriff Dever told CNSNews.com by telephone on Monday, His words sadden me. He and he alone can define what he meant, just as the shooter of Gabrielle Giffords and all the others he killed and injured can only answer for himself.
Dever said the alleged shooter, 22-year-old Jared Loughner, who was arrested at the scene and now faces numerous federal charges, including attempted assassination, is believed to have acted alone. Loughner is accused of killing six people waiting in line to see Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.). He injured another 13, including Giffords, who remains in critical condition with a bullet wound to the brain.
To blame anyone other than Loughner is misguided, Dever said. If there is anything more frightening or sad about this event, it is that anyone would try to lay the blame on anyone elses doorstep, other than that of the sick kid who carried this out, Dever said.
John M. Roll, the chief U.S. District Judge in Arizona, 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, and one of Giffords staff were among those killed in the attack.
As reported earlier [3] by CNSNews.com, Dupnik has been criticized by fellow Democrats in the past for remarks he made about immigration, including his proposal that the legal status of children in Arizona public schools be checked.
At the same press conference on Saturday, Dupnik said, But, again, Id just like to say that when you look at unbalanced people, how they are, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous. And, unfortunately, Arizona I think has become sort of the capital. We have become the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry.
Arizonas Pima and Cochise counties are located on the U.S. border with Mexico.
uh, the sheriff in question has run for that office as a Democrat for years. ... do ya think maybe it could be because ...?

Your friend and colleague, Pima County Sheriff Clarence
Dupnik had “skin in the game” BEFORE the murders
by covering up scores of complaints
against the perp — for some reason ( <=== answer here).
Dupnik is simply reading from a prewritten script. Sadly even Gabby Gifford’s brother in law is reading from the same script from the space station.
Never mind the thousands of Arizonans kidnapped, raped and murdered by illegal aliens in Arizona, someone important was killed!
Sorry for the cynicism (not really).
Wasn’t Sheriff Dip$hit also asked to provide security for this event?
The Sheriff needs to be investigated by the grand jury for deliberate indifference.
(And, wasn’t the judge who was murdered rule against Obamacare?)
bttt
Good question. Was he? Lotsa people would like to know, now that he's jumped out in front of the cameras the way he has.
HE admitted they had run-ins before and did nothing about it. That's why he is lawyered up.

I believe he is trying to shift blame away from himself and his department. I’ve read that there was more than one complaint filed to the his office about the killer.

I see this coming around to bite these Rats, big time.
That certainly would be an indicator of a flawed worldview...

whenever there is a really bad incident that can easily be attributed to their pervasive ideology, they call it “isolated” - no matter that there is a distinct pattern, all incidents in the pattern are “isolated”.
BUT, if anything remotely can be attributed to something one conservative has said, the whole conservative movement needs to be silenced and punished by the State.

They share a common trait, the vile seething hatred of Palin since the convention, when she made fun of their mental cripple pet Obama.
PING
I wonder if the word “vitriol” ever entered Dupnik’s spoken vocabulary until this recent incident. I’m reminded of how the press all glommed onto “gravitas” at the very moment Dick Cheney was named as George W. Bush’s vice presidential running mate.
Creepy
Not creepy at all. It's coordinated. They get on the same page early via JournoList or another such mechanism and then pound away in unison, all putting out the same line.
