Royal Navy's Falklands ship turned away by Brazil
The Royal Navy's Falkland Islands protection ship has been turned away from docking in Rio de Janeiro in an indication that Brazil's new government could back Argentine claims to the islands.
By Robin Yapp, Sao Paulo
Despite continuing tensions with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, the Navy had until now enjoyed cordial relations with its Brazilian equivalent.
But last week, within days of the former left-wing guerilla Dilma Rousseff succeeding Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as Brazil's president, HMS Clyde was refused permission to stop in Rio.
Miss Rousseff is due to visit Argentina at the end of this month, in her first international trip, with closer trade relations between South American countries due to be discussed.
The decision to block the Royal Navy ship from docking "satisfied" the government of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner in Buenos Aires, according to the Argentine newspaper Clarin.
HMS Clyde was forced to re-route and instead dock later in Chile, where the Royal Navy still enjoys good relations.
It is the first time that Brazil has refused permission for a British ship to dock in such circumstances and the decision appears to be a clear indication that Miss Rousseff wanted to send a message to Britain and Argentina over the Falklands.
Mark Jones, of the department of political science at Rice University in Texas, said the decision by Brazil suggested that relations with Britain could suffer as Miss Rousseff "plays the anti-colonial card" to satisfy left-wing factions of her Workers' Party.
Miss Rousseff is viewed as a leader who will have to offer greater concessions to the grass routes of her party than her predecessor Mr Lula, who enjoyed popularity ratings of more than 80 per cent.

An important story that will get little press.
It’s too bad Argentina didn’t win the Falkland’s War, that way the islands could be a left-wing dump as well.
Lefty South America thinks it’s a rising world power, especially Brazil, and they define themselves very much in opposition to the USA and even Europe. Like a tempermental child, they seem itiching to teach us a lesson, to get even for some imagined slight.
The ship..via the British embassy must have sent a message requesting diplomatic clearance to the Brazil foreign affairs office. This request must have been denied or there was no response. The ship had to be notified by message prior to arrival to the port that it was denied clearance.
The ship was not turned away at the port.
The US Embassy had to be aware of the message traffic.
I am wondering if Obama played a role in the denial of the port visit.
I don’t think the official leader of ‘the empire’ as Chavez likes to call us, gets much input down there, but at very least, Obama’s obvious weakness as a leader, combined with his reflexively anti-British nature, certainly doesn’t dissuade this kind of hostility.
That is the butt-ugliest “warship” I’ve ever seen.
President Obama is getting a chance to slap our great ally once again.
I used to like Uruguay...beautiful amethyst, much better than Brazil's.
Oh, they’re rising, but their not a world power. Their rise is relative. Brazil’s economy is less than half the size of China’s, and their military us not a player. We need to keep perspective. China, so often lauded as the world’s new superpower, has a GDP utterly dwarfed by our own, and also by Europe. Brazil, Argentina and the others can be troublemakers, and they will be, but they’re playing way outside their league to call themselves world powers.
Rio de Janeiro is third world crap-hole outside the Toruist area commonly known as Zona Zul (I know because I am posted here with the American Consualte). Brazil sucks. Import duties are 100 percent on exports, gas is $11 a gallon and they have the largest reserves in the world. Brazils problem is that it is literally a nation of city states with a loose central government. It’s claim to boarders were drawn by Western European Powers so I might suggest to these numskulls that they be careful least they end up like africa. Brazil is a nation of a few haves and many, many have nots.
It is better than Djibouti..where I was sent for one year..which turned to two then three years..did many ship and aircraft clearances..TDY’s to Addis..Oman and Frankfurt helped.
I can see where this thread is headed...next thing you know, someone will bring up Carmella or British dental hygiene...in 5, 4, 3, 2...
Considering what they just elected as prez, I’m not suprised one bit. And now, thanks to Soros and his buttboy, this witch will have oil wealth to help expand communism throughout the region.
I believe Brazil’s borders were drawn by a Pope, to settle a conflict between 2 Catholic countries. I wasn’t aware that they had border disputes with neighbors, as some of the border is in very remote areas.
I’m surprised Uruguay would officially support Argentina; many Argentines treat Uruguay as a runaway province that will eventually be returned to the fold. Also, they’re World Cup rivals...
: )
GDP is a terrible measure. It can be a measure of consumption, not really production.
And even if we use GDP, China will be overtaking us in a decade or so. And with the way the world economy works these days, power is tied even more to “rising or falling” than current position. We can be king of the hill, but if we’re seen to be falling, investment and loans cease...and it’s difficult to project any power in those circumstances.
And Brazil is making moves we should be making—e.g., cutting government spending. I’m not saying they are right now a major world power, but they are a world power in that they are attracting a lot of interest.
Well, that was certainly fast. So Brits ... feel so good about getting rid of the Ark Royal and your Harriers now?
if they weren’t full of horrible leftist welfare cases, I would suggest that we take over all the British Islands off of Florida....
...but like I said...who wants them.
