In the wake of the tragic shooting in Tuscon, Ariz. that left six dead and 14 injured, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Fox News President Roger Ailes is saying that his network and others in politics and the media need to "tone it down."
In an interview with Russell Simmons, published today by Simmons' website Global Grind, Ailes addressed the tragedy and the partisan rhetoric some say is to blame for the incident.
Ailes to some extent defended Sarah Palin's use of crosshairs imagery during the 2010 campaign, arguing that such rhetoric was not uncommon in politics. Palin has come under criticism in the wake of the shooting for having created a "target list" of lawmakers she hoped to unseat, including Giffords. Palin released a map featuring the 20 targeted House Democrats that used crosshairs to show their districts.

But Ailes called the use of such imagery "bulls**t" and said "both sides are wrong, but they both do it."
"I told all of our guys, shut up, tone it down, make your argument intellectually," the Fox News president said. "You don't have to do it with bombast. I hope the other side does that."

Both Rush and Beck are so much better on radio and cover info so much faster.
One would think that with the higher bandwidth of video (with sound) one could move faster, but the actuality is that radio (audio only) seems to be 5 to 10x faster.
Maybe it's the target audience?
IMO, Ailes and many if not most on the right have been snokered by the tactic the Dems and the Media are using.
This is not about pinning the tragedy on the tea party or Rush or Palin or anyone else for that matter, that is not the goal of the left. This is about what’s NOT being talked about. Last week we were on repeal of Obama Kare, spending cuts, stopping cap and tax, reducing the size and scope of the federal government, etc. etc. The Dems and the left are using this “crisis” as a diversion away from the new congress putting a stop to the assault on freedom and the statist march towards socialism.
Next week the speaker better be saying “business as usual” and we are going to do the job the American people hired us to do. The vote to repeal the obama care bill should take place first thing next week.
I worked mostly in radio. The reason radio “moves” so much faster is that essentially, only one person (at a time) is involved. Something that takes one person to do on radio takes about 12 to do on TV. So it takes longer to produce and deliver. There are a lot more layers. OTOH, in my opinion, the people who work in TV are generally nicer than the people in radio because they’ve all learned to get along with each other. They have to.
I listen to the radio only now. Do you have HD radio or satellite? Mine is only regular analog and am dying to have access to 24/7 news. I suppose satellite is the only option there?
Internet radio just about covers it.
Also, some people are just better on radio than TV. And vice-versa. Looks have something to do with it, but that’s not all of it. I am not a big fan of Beck but I always thought Rush was horrible on TV and great on radio. All I can remember are all those guys clapping in the audience. I just think some people are more confident on radio.
I expect Rove, then Huckster followed by Lindsey Graham.
the problem is there won't be any "toning down". This is the event liberals have been hoping for to bring the rhetorical ball back into their court. They are going to milk this for all its worth. This will be Koran flushing and Abu Ghraib times 50!
No wonder we always seem to end up giving back every inch of ground we gain.

Well that’s well and good but have dial up. Not particulary conducive to streaming media. I thought perhaps you had other sources.
They sure seem like they are hell bent on it. But Mr. Ailes capitulating over nothing is one way to fan the flames
Radio is a spontaneous medium. The speaker can speak off the top of his head, without preparation. A caller can change the direction of the show on a dime. From a production standpoint, the medium is supple and agile.
TV is anything but spontaneous. Neither supple, nor agile. In fact, it's awkward. Every segment is rehearsed, to determine the order of speaking, the camera angles, the direction of the conversation, coordinate graphic support, etc.
Generally, it takes about eight hours to produce one half-hour "live-to-tape" show -- two hours of pre-production, four hours on the set, two hours of editing.

The left screams for “civility” when they’ve been caught lying yet again.
Ailes is wrong. They are spewing hate. We tell the truth.
They are, after all, the ones who blamed innocent people for this crime. We are defending the innocent. These two positions are not equivalent. Giffords herself accused the “tea party” and Palin of provoking violence on the part of people who would never hurt her, and meanwhile she never saw it coming that the crazies on her own side of the aisle were going to do her in.
We need to be developing more information networks of our own. We can’t be overly dependent on Fox; there has to be more.
They are coming for the internet.

Mark Penn, Democratic strategist and former chief strategist for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, let out the kind of doozy, on last night’s Hardball, that must be seen to be believed. Comparing Obama’s current situation to the aftermath of the 1994 “Republican Revolution,” Penn noted that it took the Oklahoma City tragedy in order for President Clinton to “reconnect” with the American people.
He then stepped off the cliff by saying that President Obama needed a “similar event” to achieve that reconnection following his party’s midterm losses. (h/t Eyeblast)
The pathetic aspect of the politics surrounding the massacre is the presumption and fabrication of the killer’s motivation.
The Left used the killings as a platform for their hatred of the Right.
