A well-known public defender who has represented controversial clients, including the "Unabomber," has been appointed to defend Jared Lee Loughner, the man accused of shooting Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D) this weekend.

Judy Clarke will appear with Loughner, 22, at his initial court appearance Monday afternoon and the Federal Public Defender's Office in Phoenix has recommended that she be appointed as his attorney, according to the Arizona Republic. CNN also reported Clarke's role.

Loughner faces two federal murder charges in connection with the killings of federal judge John Roll and Giffords aide Gabe Zimmerman. He also has been charged with three counts of attempted murder in the shooting of Giffords and two of her staffers. Loughner will face additional state charges in connection with the killings and shootings of non-federal employees.

A judge is expected to set the dates for a preliminary hearing and a detention hearing on Monday. Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said on ABC's "Good Morning America" Monday that Loughner has so far not cooperated with law enforcement while in custody.

Smart guy. That alone should indicate that he is not crazy. - Other than being a brain dead liberal, that is.

Looks like if you are a mass murderer or serial killer, you should keep her number in your Rolodex.

crazy or not, after shooting people point blank in the head and shooting old people and children in the back, we don’t need a lawyer. All we need is an executioner

Makes sense, the Unabomber was from the far left.

Heard that earlier.

Who’s paying her?

She probably bills close to a kilobuck per hour.

It does not look like she has a very good track record in getting these people off.

“It does not look like she has a very good track record in getting these people off. “

Which brings a smile to my face.

Her M.O. in the Theodore Kaczynski case was to persuade her client (who had murdered three, not six people) to plead guilty to all charges and accept life in federal prison without parole.

The only reason why she was able to do that was because the FBI felt a responsibility to David Kaczynski - who turned his brother in with the request that his brother not be executed.

Had the FBI not been beholden to David Kaczynski for the lead that cracked the case, she would not have been able to negotiate that sweet a deal.

In this case, Jared Loughner murdered twice as many people and tried to murder a Congresswoman - and his capture and arrest was not thanks to any intervention by anyone who cares about her client.

Being insane did not help Kaczynski in the slightest and it will not help Loughner either.

IIRC, the “insanity plea” was made more difficult to claim after the John Hinckley attempted at murder on Reagan.

( It rarely ever works to claim insanity )
