Coldest January Since 1985 Could be Taking Shape
AccuWeather.com ^ | Jan 7, 2011

Posted on 01/09/2011 9:57:53 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

For people who hate cold weather, the forecast for the next couple of weeks is bad news. Waves of frigid air invading the U.S. will become progressively colder and more widespread, with the worst coming in the third week of January.

Many people in the East will get a slight taste of the colder air this weekend before more substantial cold takes hold from coast to coast next week.

This upcoming cold weather pattern could yield snow or ice in places that don't often get it. Seattle, Wash., Portland, Ore., Dallas, Texas, Memphis, Tenn., and Charlotte, N.C., are all in the running for possible snow or ice next week.

How widespread the cold air is across the U.S. through mid- to late month could make this the coldest January for the nation as a whole since 1985, according to AccuWeather.com Chief Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi.

hahaaha, in January 1985 I had 3 kids .. 1 2 y/o and 2 1 y/o’s ... do you think I followed the news ???? In pop culture quizzes to this day anything out of the 80s is completely lost on me.

The one wonderful thing about those years, tho, that I can remember, was having Reagan in the White House. We lived in DC, and frequently saw his motorcade going by. That was great.

I remember Jan. ‘85 too well. I lived in Raleigh, NC and it got down to -9 degrees. Coldest I’ve ever felt and don’t want to repeat it!

Been pretty darned cold here in southern Middle TN the past month, and now we have snow falling like crazy. It started here about 3 hours ago and we have 6 inches already. Not typical for around here.

I used to laugh at “snowbirds” but now I want to BE one. LOL! I fully understand that desire to head south for the winter.

Why is the COLD JET STREAM so far south and continuous...?

Answer:

The Gulf Loop is SWITCHED OFF

Thus the Gulf is cooler and the usual warm column of air above the Gulf is not as strong as usual...

Result bigger Cold Jet Streams...

Bonus Question....Why is the Gulf Loop Switched off...?

Answer...

Because of all the crude oil BP dumped in the Gulf.

Unintended consequence:

Gulf current weakened and Europe freezes.

Snowing here in West Georgia, 2 to 3 inches so far.
Snowed on Christmas day too, first time since 1883.

Climate change... you see, the proof the planet is heating up is that it gets very cold. And when the polar bears freeze, those ice floes will start melting soon and the oceans will rise!

They’ll be rising this month! Now does Obama have a plan to heal the planet? This is even more of a “crisis to waste” than health care!

Avert Climate Change! Save Our Planet!

We had a white Christmas, too, but it hadn’t been quite so long since the last one. Only 17 yrs. versus your 127 yrs. LOL!

With luck, y’all won’t get hit with the 2nd round of snow that’ll hit us tomorrow, coming from the northwest. That’s not supposed to be as heavy a hit as this storm, but it’ll still be more snow. pooey!! It’s pretty to look at, but I’d much rather see it in photos or on TV - not through my windows.

Where are you and how cold is it? I lived in HI for about 14 years; once I lived at about 1000 plus feet above Hilo and in the winter early morning it was 55 to 56. I was frozen.

A friend called me today from Oahu and said she turned the oven on this morning and left it open, to warm up.

I have a cat who really could use a check-up at the vet clinic tomorrow. But I don’t think it’s going to be possible. We have almost 8 inches now and it’s still coming down. We’re in the country and the road we live on isn’t ever salted or plowed. Since the temps aren’t supposed to get above freezing all week, we may be stuck for a bit. :-(

Hope things clear up quickly for y’all so you’ll be able to make your appt. tomorrow. Or that you’re, at least, somewhere where they clear the roads.

I love being in the country but it does have a few drawbacks.

I wonder as we go into a cooling period (the next ice age the libs will call it) if the Cap and Traders will come up with snow credits as opposed to oil credits. They will have to come up with something to sucker the public with and make their millions off of.

Heck radu, we are south! We have an inch in the midlands of SC this morning and it is still snowing a little. The entire state is shut down because we are expecting ice on top of this later today.

This cold air reminds us why we never want to move North. Of course if it keeps up we’ll have to move FURTHER south to stay warm.

It’s good to be on the southern side of that jet stream.

Let's hope that translates into a quiet 2011 GOM hurricane season.

It seems as if someone has been reading the articles of the British tabloids instead of just looking at the naughty bits.
