A longtime friend of Jared Lee Loughner, the suspect in custody following the murder of six people in an apparent assassination attempt on Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, said there was a mysterious, significant change in him a year before the shooting. "He was a good person that just somehow changed so much," former classmate and friend Tong Shan told ABC News in an exclusive interview. "I don't know what the hell happened to him."

When she heard news reports of Loughner's arrest in connection with the deadly attack, she said, "I was shocked, but I believed it was him."

According to court documents released today, authorities discovered a safe in Loughner's home with a thank you letter from Giffords for attending a Congress on Your Corner event in 2007 -- the same kind of event Loughner allegedly assaulted Saturday. Another envelope said "I planned ahead," "My assassination" and "Giffords" and bore what appears to be Loughner's signature, the documents said.

The Sheriff has some serious questions about his ability to protect his constituents.

If we had a real media , this idiot would have a serious inquiry into what he knew about this young man.

Yes, and then lashed out at innocent people engaging in Free Speech.

I'm becoming convinced that the best way to spot a liberal is to look at the other end of a blame finger.

***I knew pot caused brain cell death but, I didn’t know pot could cause that.***

Pot, Marajuana, AKA Hassish is the root word of (h)assassin.

The OLD MAN of THE MOUNTAINS used to get his followers high on this stuff, then release them to kill people.

No slam. He sounds like he was self-medicating with pot and alcohol.

I wonder that his parents didn’t try to get him into some treatment or if they just couldn’t get an adult son to do anything.

He’s over 21. What could they do. I really pity them.

I know alcohol can cause violence. I’ve been on the receiving end of that. I just thought pot made you all mellow. I didn’t realize that it was ever used that way.

Here are the facts on schizophrenia and marijuana:

“Researchers in New Zealand found that those who used cannabis by the age of 15 were more than three times (300%) more likely to develop illnesses such as schizophrenia. Other research has backed this up, showing that cannabis use increases the risk of psychosis by up to 700% for heavy users, and that the risk increases in proportion to the amount of cannabis used (smoked or consumed).

Additionally, the younger a person smokes/uses cannabis, the higher the risk for schizophrenia, and the worse the schizophrenia is when the person does develop it. Research by psychiatrists in inner-city areas speak of cannabis being a factor in up to 80 percent of schizophrenia cases.”

“Professor John Henry, clinical toxicologist at Imperial College London said research has shown that people with a certain genetic makeup who use the drug face a ten times (1000%) higher risk of schizophrenia. “

“Without the effects of the drug [marijuana], such a person might live their whole life without ever experiencing mental health problems. It has been estimated, for example, that between 8% and 13% of people that have schizophrenia today would never have developed the illness without exposure to cannabis.”

http://www.schizophrenia.com/prevention/streetdrugs.html

The idea that marijuana is harmless is a myth. There are a lot of users that would like it to be harmless and have warped the public perception of it - just like libs do with so many other pet issues.

Please pass this on to people who might benefit. Thanks.

“something that’s known to trigger schizophrenia”

OMG,, you said “trigger”. Now some nut is going to read your words and it’s going to light his fuse! Oh crap,, now i’ve done it too! Just be careful,, we must all learn to speak literally. We can only use trigger if we want someone shot. We can only use lit fuses for bombs.

Careful everybody,, Oh, and never oppose democrats. It is apparently something very bad called “vitriol”.

I have little patience for this sheriff. He can’t protect his constituents. He can react after crime and apprehend the perps and make them available to be brought to trial. More than that is unrealistic.

I’m just sorry nobody was there that had a concealed weapon, who could have ended this by the time the guy had fired his third shot.

None the less, this Sheriff wants stricter gun control.

Law abiding citizens won’t have them and criminals will. They always will.

People use proganda for it very successfully. Look on here, you’ll see tons defending it and saying ‘there’s no evidence’ right after you give them links to the evidence that it’s bad news.

Potheads are almost always completely delusional about their problem.

He was a pothead which does trigger schizophrenia. But the MSM would never tell you that. Ohhhhhhh nooooooo. They want you to think of it as organic. Herbal. Harmless.

Slam me all you want, but it's increasingly obvious this was an unhinged, unmedicated adult-onset schizophrenic.

No reason to slam you since it's all but certainly true. It would take a competent psychiatrist to make a clinical diagnosis, but certainly all the signs point in that direction. The tragedy of schizophrenia is that it is a disease that afflicts late teens to young adults, and is incurable. Unlike many syndromes, schizophrenia is a genuine, physical disease of the brain.

About half of all schizophrenic people are also drug users, but it is unknown if drug abuse is a causative to or a result of the disease.

Who on this thread is saying marijuana is harmless, or even hinted at it?

is that just a correlation, or did they establish a mechanism of causality? It would seem expected to me that a 15 year old, with a very early, almost imperceptable, slide into schizophrenic madness, would use a depressant to quiet the growing inner storm. Pot would be the trick, and probably easier for most kids to get than alcohol.

looks like a pretty clear example of post hoc ergo propter hoc to me. I can’t see how blaming it on pot is any different from blaming it on Sarah Palin, but our side has it’s share of idiots too.

Not to mention, they say that to call todays product “pot”, implying it’s the same thing farm kids smoked in the 40s is a huge stretch. The THC level of todays stuff is astronomically higher. Parents who know their kid smokes it, and kind of laugh it off as something they did a few decades ago are making a big mistake.
