Another Pima classmate, Lydian Ali, said Loughner would frequently laugh aloud to himself during the advanced-poetry class they attended. Only about 16 people were in the class, so Loughner's behavior stood out, Ali said.

"It almost seemed like he was on his own planet, because his comments would have nothing to do with what we were talking about," Ali said.

Loughner's online accounts contain some political comments but are dominated by bizarre discussions of his desire to establish a new currency and his disdain for what he considered the public's low literacy rates. He also wrote threatening and despairing messages.

That does sound quite a bit like schizophrenia. Compare him to the Unabomber, whose writings were perfectly lucid, to-the-point, and completely non-rambling, despite the formula the lamebrain media is always spouting.

I want to know if those persons (possibly DailyKos people), that made false and misleading facebook - myspace pages yesterday claiming to be Loughner will be investigated and possibly criminally charged for interfering with and or obstruction of a federal investigation of this crime?

It would be interesting to learn the motive for his attempt to join the US Military. Perhaps a ‘Fort Hood Wannabee’?

Then this: “He tried to enlist in the Army in 2008 but was rejected, said First Sgt. Brian Homme, who oversees Army recruiting in Tucson. Loughner was sent to Phoenix to take a test and physical, but “he was found to be unqualified,” Homme said.”

We can only imagine how this rejection played on his narcissistic mind - being so intellectually superior to all the lesser mortals in the Military.

Add the irony that the Congresswoman’s husband is serving in Afghanistan.

Maybe he'll get out like Mark Chapman and go on to marry a rich woman.

It is my understanding that the mental health laws have been modified such that it is the “RIGHT” of the mentally ill to do something like this. Only then can we absolutely classify that they are likely to cause harm to society.

With privacy laws such as they are any practitioner of care could not tell anyone about the guy else they face loss of job if not lawsuits.

Rather than focus on the gun, or Sarah Palin perhaps its time that the country focus on protection from nut jobs like this. He was obviously contacted by law enforcement more than once - and walked. He obviously has parents who may or may not have tried best they could - but their hands are tied as to how far they can go.

And the question remains how did this guy get the gun? Did he buy it? It’s perfectly logical that he could have bought it - nobody reported his delusional behavior - perhaps out of fear of “offending” his sensibilities.

Ultimately the blame for the tragedy lies on the perpetrator - but our mental health and legal professions have ensured that people like this can walk among us. Maybe it’s time to change THOSE laws.

I live in SW MO., I have legal firearms.

One question: As many hoops as I had to jump through to legally own a firearm, (and I am not a felon, nor do I have a history of drug use, nor am I an individual with a history of death threats against others, nor does anyone think I am crazy for my weird outbursts, nor are the gun laws particularly strict, and it still took some doing) how was he even ABLE to obtain a gun?

O.M.G. I’m guilty of 2 out of the 3.

His college studies may have played a part in his psychosis.

Here's what I found after some digging:

FWIW, I suspect the other guy they’re looking for played a large role in this, perhaps making use of the obviously disturbed younger man to carry out his desires. I’ll bet the older guy on the loose is the rabid anti-semite. Just my thoughts.

It is absolutely disgusting to see “political rhetoric” (undoubtedly only from the right) being blamed for this shooting. The left will stoop to ANYTHING. Never was there fiercer nastiness than what was poured out toward President Bush. Nothing going on now compares to that.

I would like to know what the gunman’s note says.

Sounds like Loughner is a prime example of the result of the therapeutic state. he got involved in weird psychological therapies and, as is usual, became even crazier than he normally was. I’d like to see what drug was prescribed for him recently.

Wonder if JL was a fan of Comedy Central? I’d like to be able to blame Jon Stewart.

Schizophrenia, paranoid delusions--have seen this is the children of acquaintances when their kids hit their early twenties. It's genetic.

But I am seriouly PO'd that they are screaming this schizo blame at Palin, conservs, etc.

I hope we're ready to go on the offense. We could start with that puffy old crook of a Sheriff, Clarence Dupnik.

How on earth did the media (FOX included) so quickly determine that he was an "Afghanistan veteran" and it was okay to report that without confirmation? They took a rumor and ran with it.

Every darned one of them has an anti-Conservative agenda. Instead of saying "I am Spartacus!" each could very well say "I am Dan Rather!"

https://health.google.com/health/ref/Schizophrenia

Loughner is clearly and classically schizophrenic. Typical age of onset in males, and typical development. Probably he'd be classified as undifferentiated type since he has symptoms of both paranoid and disorganized type.

Usually schizophrenics aren't violent, but they also usually have some family that cares enough to them some help. That appears not to be the case here.

At any rate, the state media is too busy blaming people they don't like, like Palin, Rush and Beck, for the results of a simple genetic disorder. Honest and intelligent reporting (of which there is none anymore in our nation at the national level) would realize and explore the issue of schizophrenia, which has an incredible incidence of 1% worldwide.
