Geithner WARNS Congress: Raise debt ceiling (Giffords voted no 2010)
The Washington Times ^ | January7, 2011 | Joel Larson

In an outreach effort to Congress on Thursday, Secretary Geithner wrote a pleading letter to raise the debt ceiling.

In recent years, raising the debt ceiling has been somewhat clockwork for lawmakers in Washington. However this time around, newly elected members of the 112th Congress may not see such a process as business as usual.

... Of course one stance that could be taken on the issue is to simply vote against raising the debt ceiling. Such a position

... would be "deeply irresponsible" according to Geithner and would result in major consequences

U.S. REP. GABRIELLE GIFFORDS VOTES AGAINST INCREASE IN DEBT CEILING

(NOTE: Gifford voted against raising the debt last year.)

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords today cast two votes to rein in federal deficits by refusing to go along with an increase in the debt limit and imposing new rules on future federal government spending.

Giffords was among only a handful of Democrats to break with her party’s leadership and vote against a measure that will increase the nation’s debt limit by a record amount.

“What is the purpose of having a debt limit if we vote to increase it every time we hit the limit?” Giffords asked. “No Arizonan could do that with their household budget. It is unfortunate that so many of my colleagues don’t understand that we must have the fiscal will to halt out-of-control government spending.”

The resolution to increase the debt limit narrowly passed the House 217-to-212. Giffords was one of only 37 Democrats to vote against the increase.

Five other Arizonans in the House – two Democrats and three Republicans – voted with Giffords to oppose the increase.

MAKES ONE WONDER HOW CLOSE THE VOTE IS GOING TO BE THIS TIME.

“MAKES ONE WONDER HOW CLOSE THE VOTE IS GOING TO BE THIS TIME. “

If it’s close in the House, the 2012 freshman class will be all brand new Pubbies or all Dems.

Jeez, Giffords stood out like a sore thumb among her Democrat colleagues. History has shown that to be very dangerous.

Exactly. If I were one of the other Dems contemplating voting against raising the debt ceiling, I’d hire my own extra security right about now.

She used to be Republican, does anyone know what changed her?

She is extremely liberal on social issues.

The fact that she’s a flaming leftist is probably what did it.

raising the debt ceiling is Catch-22
catastrophic if we do
catastrophic if we don’t

This sounds like a threat. Big money will be sure to make real Americans pay through the nose if Congress doesn’t do as they’re told.

I suggest they pass legislation to raise the debt limit by one year. And attach amendments

If nothing else, it would be humorous to see how the Senate deals with this. Of course there would have to be a conference committee, more merriment.

And then the biggie: would nobama sign it?

Michele Bachman could get her hits in on the Dodd-Frank financial bill.

Turning this into a cost slashing opportunity could be loads of fun!

“(use the scanner or you don’t board)”

I respectfully ask that you think that statement through.

Doctors are recommending that cancer survivors not go through those scanners. Your policy would mean that cancer survivors give up the right to fly. As a three time cancer survivor, I take issue. Why not change the policy to profile, profile, PROFILE?

I withdraw my suggestion (which was done only for effect) and applaud your suggestion of profiling.
