A conservative civil war over CPAC
Politico ^ | 01/08/2011 | Ben Smith and Byron Tau

Posted on 01/08/2011 9:41:24 AM PST by Pyro7480

Friction between parts of the social conservative and libertarian wings of the conservative movement has escalated into a shooting war in the run-up to the 28-year old Conservative Political Action Conference, with accusations of embezzlement (true), homosexuality (true), and creeping sharia (disputed) hurled against the 28-year old conservative institution.

CPAC’s leaders respond that its foes’ real gripe is that it won’t give a platform to their lunatic conspiracy theories about presidential birth certificates (disputed).

...Two of the heavyweight groups of the broader right, the Heritage Foundation and the Media Research Center, have dropped out of CPAC and are expected, planners said, to add to the Value Voter Summit’s heft....

...Long-simmering resentment of two of the leading figures on the economic right, American Conservative Union Chairman David Keene – who runs the event — and Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist, who has long been involved in planning it, has morphed into a conflict that carries the special bitterness of a civil war.

“There are a lot of conservatives who see a larger problem with Grover Norquist and David Keene, and they’ve decided to fight it out and CPAC is a proxy for that,” said Erick Erickson, the publisher of RedState.org, who said he won’t be participating in the conference because he wants to stay out of the conflict. “The underlying question is whether the conservative movement still has strong planks for social conservatism and national security conservatism. But it has also become very personal.”

...Brent Bozell, who heads the Media Research Center, long had a prominent role at the event, has emerged as another leading critic.

“It’s a small handful of people making very dangerous decisions,” he said in an interview, accusing Keene and his allies of “not just horrible policy, but suicidal politics.”

David Keene and Grover Norquist should be ostracized.

I don’t really see the problem. They should just rename CPAC Communist PAC and make sure everyone knows it. There is nothing conservative about this group of democrat wannabes.

Why do I have a feeling we are going to be hearing about all of this dysfunctional infighting and bickering all of the way through Obama's second term?

CPAC has brought this on themselves. GOProud was the last straw.

And before people accuse anyone of splitting the movement, CPAC is entirely responsible for doing that. You cannot have a conservative movement without defending the social issues: marriage, family, and the right to life.

First, it’s just plain wrong. And second, it will SPLIT the party, just as Rove succeeded in doing in 2006.

You cannot have true freedom without responsibility. You cannot have freedom without the right to LIFE. If people cannot be shown how to discipline themselves, then the police state will move in and do it for them. And police states are not terribly concerned about the real moral issues. They just want power.

A conservative civil vs. libertarian (liberal in conservatives clothing) war over CPAC..

There's the correct title...

Well, our house will stand just fine once we remove the rot that exists within, namely those that support Abortion, those that support Homosexuality, those that are not limit-government.

We need to either convince them of the strength, morality, and correctness of our positions, or they need to leave.

There is no compromise with evil.

Precisely right. By pandering to smaller, agenda driven groups, CPAC is losing a larger group of conservatives.

Once the selling out begins, its nearly impossible to stop.

A few years back it was Soros lackeys holding both pro and con positions in a CPAC drug policy debate.

My statements stem from my concern that Obama may get his second term as President in much the same way that John McCain became the Republican nominee in the last Presidential election.

To: R_Kangel; All

There is an FR thread about how slow FR is today. Now I have encountered a new problem, when I try to post a reply I get a notice that the page cannot be displayed. If I try a second time it goes OK???

“why do I have a feeling we are going to be hearing about all of this dysfunctional infighting...”

Because unless someone in Congress is extremely diplomatic and skillful, the Tea Party wing, the RHINO wing, and the old guard GOP will find lots to argue about and manage to stay in the media spotlight to facilitate a Dem win in 2012. Also, while there is a lot to complain about in health care, many people are relieved that their children will be covered until age 26, especially with this high unemployment. They also don’t like the idea of having their health care cancelled just when they need it most, and similar issues, which affect Tea Party people just as much as Dems.

Friction between parts of the social conservative and libertarian wings of the conservative movement...

Lets get real with this framing -a flawed premise. Since when are conservatives -republicans -those that proclaim legitimate individual rights unalienable endowed men by the Creator -a nation under God... --SINCE WHEN are conservatives morally and or socially neutral political force with only a fringe element that is socially and morally conservative?

Let's call a spade a spade -the fringe the fringe. Libertarians are socially and morally liberal. They are freedom loving opportunists that deny the very thing that premises their freedom...

The Libertarians seek to corrupt the right much as the communists have successfully corrupted the left. This is quite obvious to me...
