Former astronaut Harrison Schmitt, who walked on the moon and served in the U.S. Senate, was nominated Thursday by Gov. Susana Martinez to run a state agency that oversees energy production in New Mexico.
Schmitt was selected as cabinet secretary of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department. Schmitt, 75, was one of the last men to walk on the moon as part of the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. He won election to the Senate in 1976, but lost his re-election bid in 1982 to Democrat Jeff Bingaman, who remains in the Senate.
Martinez said the Schmitt's task is to make sure "we are developing the resources responsibly without killing jobs."
Schmitt said New Mexico has been "ill served" by regulations during the Richardson administration, contending that jobs in the energy industry have moved to other states.

“Jack” Schmitt is one of the finest straight arrows I have ever known. He was my Senator and a friend.
And he is exceedingly well qualified to serve in the post. He is a Geologist and was the only “civilian” to walk on the moon.
An excellent pick.
Yes. It was something very bad and I forge. John Glenn is a disgusting person.
A member of the US astronaut corps, manned space program...with BRAINS. Who'd a thunk it?
It helps that he was never of the “pilot” mentality.
There are two approaches to these things.
The left truly does not care about anything but power and control, so the only schemes they will countenance lead to these things. Everything else must be prevented, in their lights.
A realistic approach is that people need energy, efficiently, which means an equation involving economics, science, efficiency and what produces more energy at lower cost. If whatever it is can do this, then it is realistic. No need for government at all. At all. The market will handle it.
Add “stinking, lying, traitorous jerk.” There are few more despicable than Glenn. Pew. And Slayton wasn’t much better, he just never ran for office.
In SC, a lot of old boy RINOs don’t like her (Haley). SC may have the first Tea Party candidates in a state house in the next few years. Too many of our “Repubs” are just Dems who can’t win in their own party.
Very true about RINOs here in SC. One telltale sign for me is that when Nikki strikes a real nerve, my wacko, angry, and miserable dim neighbor will put up some badly spelled and hard to read cardboard sign complaining about it.
He is from a fine family, his father was a very successful mining engineer.
His mother and my wife were very good friends from church there in Silver City, NM. My wife and I both worked in his campaign when he ran for re-election (he lost to Commie Jeff Bingaman). Later I was Republican County Chairman there, we lived in NM for 14 years.
Lefties still control most of NM, but there are some fine Republicans there too.
It is the ultimate lib gob stopper. Astronomers and Physicists have relied upon the model for decades. Archaeologists know it. Paleontologists know it. Paleoclimatologists know it. The only people who don't know it are environmentalists of the liberal persuasion.
The "it" is that in it's cyclical travels around the sun, Earth's orbital shape changes, axial tilt changes, and polar precession changes. These multi-millenial cycles govern how much solar radiation reaches Earth, and where.
I love the “Democratic damnation quotations” posted in #8 above. Everything he says about climate change and global warming I completely agree with.
A geologist should have a reasonable view of climate change and our limited ability to influence it.
Where I live, the polluters all have Dem campaign signs in their yards and never, ever pick up their trash, have junk cars all over the place, and let their dogs run wild.
What you don’t see but know they have is their “entitlement” mentality.
He is a Geologist and was the only civilian to walk on the moon.
Excellent!
I take it that you have a geology degree too.
President Palin, for your consideration to head NASA
The Milankovitch Glaciation Cycle
Thanks
