“Jack” Schmitt is one of the finest straight arrows I have ever known. He was my Senator and a friend.

And he is exceedingly well qualified to serve in the post. He is a Geologist and was the only “civilian” to walk on the moon.

An excellent pick.

As a space program history buff, I must correct you. Jack may have been the only moon walker never to have served in the military, but Neil Armstrong was a civilian test pilot when he walked on the moon, and may have been when he was selected as on of the “next nine” in the autumn of 1962. Others can tell us who else was not an active duty military man when they transferred to NASA.
