A former Los Angeles deputy city attorney has been charged with assaulting police with a pole after creating a scene at San Francisco International Airport in which she vandalized a coffee kiosk, authorities say.
Angela West, 50, a Harvard Law School graduate, was seen by airport police officers smashing merchandise, milk containers and other food items with a 3-foot-long metal pole at a Peet's Coffee kiosk at SFO on Christmas Eve, said San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
When officers tried to speak to her, West "raged" at them and began swinging the pole, which she had taken from a janitor's cart, Wagstaffe said.
An officer had to use a chair to fend off at least 10 blows, authorities said. West then calmed down and sat in a booth, only to start throwing items at the officers, Wagstaffe said.
When the officers tried to arrest her, she kicked one of them in the groin, Wagstaffe said. After being subdued, West shouted out that she was a lesbian . . .

You are correct sir. She could have killed them with it. She truly is lucky to be alive. I dare say most cops would not receive 10 swings before shooting her. It appears they showed remarkable restraint.

Usually they yell first, then start tearing up your life/house/room/bed/car.
So why didn’t they just shoot her? Cops are damned quick to shoot other folks just because they can see that there is something in a fellow’s hand or because they think a guy might be thinking about reaching into his pocket to get a gun that just might be there. There wasn’t even a dog nearby for them to shoot so they surely should have shot her. What is so special about the woman with the cudgel?
As soon as she announced that she was a lesbian, use of force became a civil rights issue with potential to end a career or to interfere with future promotion decisions. The usual “tase them at the least provocation” strategy went out the window at that point.

A lot of cops would have shot her for attacking them with a deadly weapon and/or refusing to obey their commands.

Yeah, really. In Phoenix a few years ago some chick ran amok in the airport. Security restrained her in a quite room. When someone went back in to check, she strangled herself trying to get free.
