At the risk of provoking the birther beast, let's talk about Gov. Neil Abercrombie's unrealistic quest to put down the delusion that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States and thus is ineligible to be its leader.
The governor surely understands that reason and evidence will never convince birthers that they are wrong.
Their irrationality will not be dissolved by facts because their notion is rooted in an inability to accept that an African American man was duly elected to be leader of this nation. Focusing on his citizenship allows them to camouflage bigotry while pretending they are nobly defending the Constitution.
It's a free country so they get to express themselves, no matter their objective.
But why isn't Abercrombie letting sleeping dogs lie? Why revive the hoo-ha conceived by the birther cult?
For one, the governor sees birthers' claims as insulting to Obama's parents, who were his college friends. But an unnamed Abercrombie aide in a Los Angeles Times article offered another explanation of the governor's motivation.
To quote the Times, the aide said his boss was "voicing the frustration of many Hawaiians who continue to be troubled by the rumors, which they see as emblematic of the view that Hawaiians are not Americans in the same way as those who live in the continental United States."
I'm pretty sure the aide didn't use the term "Hawaiian" to describe the general public here because local people know there's a difference.
The aide, however, did bring up a good point.
Whether because of distance, lifestyle, culture, composition of the population, mythical concepts of an island paradise, Arthur Godfrey or tourist industry promotions -- or all of the above -- mainlanders do look upon the 50th state as outside the American convention.

Call me a racist if you like but I expect any person running for office in this country to produce upon any citizens demand proof that they are entitled by our constitution to occupy said office. If that makes me a racist I would still be more secure with that title than the title of Democrat.

The one question that remains unanswered is, "What is he hiding"? If in fact, the real birth certificate has the same information as the "Certificate of Live Birth" which is a made up document, then, we can all agree that osamaobama is the President of the United States.
If not, the SCOTUS has a real emergency.
It has been so over played there is no manipulative powers left in the tactic. It makes the accuser look like they have their own race issues and foolish.

A couple of points - one, no one said anything about serious hate crimes, and two, in a state that essentially has two sources of income, one of which is tourism, its very much in the local governments interests to downplay any problem.
Finally, why not test your theory by taking a trip to the islands on the last school day, stand in the quad at Wm McKinley HS in honolulu holding a sign saying Bruddah Iz Sux.

As for the birthers' "reason and evidence," or lack thereof, the evidence is non existent. As for "reason," the continuing puerile argument that the "proof" of birth thus far provided is as convincing as that of an illegal alien fake social security card or driver's license renders that argument a continuing joke.
I was skeptical as to both fact and procedure from the start, and remain unconvinced; If that makes me a birther, so be it. I do not know with certainty that he is unqualified to be president; neither do I posses the certainty that he is, and I remain thus unconvinced.
The continuing undocumented assertion, coupled with the flat out refusal to provide any records whatsoever of all parts of this individual's life simply demonstrates this writer's total ignorance of the words "reason" and "evidence."
Sort of like the Pelosi grasp of the phrase "deficit reduction."
It doesn't matter to me one whit that O'Reilly, Coulter, Beck and other "conservative" pundits dismiss the concern of millions of others who remain unconvinced. All of them have demonstrated abyssmal ignorance about varied subjects and historical facts at one time or another. Ego and "PC" are in great evidence here...
Clearly, Constitutional provisions are not trivial and a requirement clearly stated must be provided with the necessary evidence that satisfies the requirements of fact and reason. Political expediency, ignorance or chicanery is not a satisfactory substitute.
It's that simple. Try to get Social Security with no real birth certificate. No, a bureaucrat's assertion that something else is "as good," is not acceptable. Corruption within a certain political party is simply to deeply ingrained for a real person to buy that.
The problem is that the COTUS defines the qualification but fails to define a process for certifying it.
My understanding is the HI, like many other states, has gone to a completely electronic storage system for this data.
IOW, there is no "birth certificate," in the sense of a 50 year old original piece of paper in a file cabinet somewhere. Does not exist.
Now whether they have released all the information in their electronic files is another question entirely, as is whether those files have been "adjusted."
