Why was Free Republic off line -- Hacker Attack?

Posted on 01/05/2011 8:11:05 PM PST by Racehorse

Discussed among friends in Central Texas concerning a prayer request.

Attempts to post to FreeRepublic failed, "server not found."

News report tonight from California about how rats and mice are chewing up cars when they get into them to get away from the bad weather. If that happened to JR’s internet access, he could claim a Tea Partier did it, just like that loser in MD who claimed his grill’s gas line had been cut by them when, in fact, it was just chewed by a squirrel.

I know the feeling. When I have to hit post several times to see it go through, something’s not right.

Dear Webmaster, Frankly, with the constant ongoing FREEPERTHON going on and the amount of money pouring in, you should have a bullet-proof system up here. But what I see are constant outages with no good explanation. Please change your host site, mirror it, and get busy with REAL INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY people and/or service to insure 100% up time - which is very do-able. Get ‘er done. It appears at least ONE blog site took advantage of this outage to re-post that recent negative dribble. Thanks!

To start with, the freepathon is constant, it is once a quarter. Secondly they don't have money "pouring in" as you put it, thirdly just how much did you donate this time or at anytime in the past? I am a monthly donor, as we all should be.

You can't expect Jim and his brother to run this place on their own money. It is FREE to people who don't want to donate, judging from the intake and how long it takes each quarter to reach the goal most people DON'T donate but some of them sure like to complain about the service, just as if they were paying for it. I suggest if you don't like FR, to simply find some other site more to your likely, perhaps one that is even cheaper to attend than FR, maybe they will pay you to log on.

Lastly, there is no Webmaster only the owner of the site, Jim Robinson, a person I, and most other FReepers, greatly admire for putting this site up and keeping it running despite cry babies like yourself.

Yah know... not everything is some great conspiracy. In fact... most things aren't.

True . . . maybe.

I only know I wished to post an update for a prayer request and the FreeRepublic server was offline.

You got to know FreeRepublic is a prime target.

We cool or what?

It usually occurs during peak interest moments. For instance, it went down during former presidential candidate Congressman Duncan L. Hunter’s live meeting with us today,. It does seem to go down when something very important is being discussed.

It’s been plastered all over the alt site and the yahoo site while it was down that the problem was with the database server, John rebooted it and it cleared up.

Calling it “hackers” without any other evidence is actually a kind of slap in the face to John Rob, who I’m sure is pretty well on top of security and firewalls for the site. He works hard to keep things running, and it’s totally unfair to kick him around like that.

Not everything that goes wrong on the net is because of “hackers”. In fact... almost nothing is.

To: Jim Robinson; metmom
We don’t know yet.

Uhm, ask metmom where she was earlier today...

I'd ask metmom how we could get her to stop doing that, myself...but I can already hear a possible answer;

"Depends".

Well, it does help to see it through DUFU eyes! :)

I always feel like I need a shower when I peek in there
from links on the threads.
